Would a totally different design have saved the Twenty Cent Piece?

It has been discussed before that the main reason the Twenty Cent Piece failed was its similarity to the Quarter Dollar, though a strong case can be made that the denomination just wasn't wanted or needed.
That said, I can't help but think that the proposed Sailor Head/ Shield design on this piece from Great Collections might have worked.

Then, rather than the quarter it would’ve been mistaken for the nickel..

The pattern design is far superior to Willy B's Seated knockoff.
However, I think it would have failed no matter what unless it completely replaced the quarter.

No the SBA dollar was different than a Washington quarter , but was mistaken for them all the time. I remember going into the store to buy a candy bar and getting 3 SBA dollar coins back in change. It should have been .75 cents back, but instead I got $3 back.

I would have loved to see the Sailor Head design on the 20c.
I think it would have looked better on the $5 and $10 too.

No, same problem as with SBA's.
I have never read a potential saving grace for the coin. I cannot figure a true need for the coin, but if one truly exists, then I feel we would have changed whatever was needed to save it. A design with a copper plug may have worked or an odd edge. Great post Cap.

I think the "need" was using up silver coming from the Comstock Lode.. 1875 was one of their high production years...

It was a solution in search of a problem.
The rationale was that no coins smaller than a dime were in circulation out west (true) and that if someone bought something for a dime, then paid with a quarter, they only got a dime back in change (strawman).
Why not mint more dimes then?
It does have the effect of exposing the problem of shoehorning a 25c piece into a decimal system. We should have been minting "double dimes" from day 1.

A .20 cent piece would be great to replace the .25 and dont see it happening
Never got the hype behind that one. Always preferred Shield Earring .
