Canada mint started selling coins with privy more than 30 years ago.
The Romans used them 2000 years ago. The UK mint has used them for centuries.
So is this really a new thing for US coinage? Are there any other coins besides 2020's V75? Was that the start here?
The first use of it was the arrows at the date in the 19th century, I think. The Grant with star would be another instance.
You could also argue that mint marks are a form of privy mark. They were usually symbols, but indicating the Mint of origin was one of the uses of them.

23K is a lot to be left, whether or not people have been gaming them. It will be interesting to see whether they lift the HHL tomorrow at the same time they put the American Liberty on sale.
EDIT: I just looked at the press release, and there is no reference to the HHL only being in effect for the first 24 hours, like they usually have. No way they are going to lift it during the American Liberty frenzy at noon.
So is this moving a bit faster than the Army privy? It certainly is much smoother in terms of distribution. I am surprised at the interest in this coin, but I guess we will see why when it gets here,

No.
It has nothing to do with this coin, other than it's an ASE. There is a dedicated group of ASE collectors.

ats is a bit over 10k, HHL still 1 this morning.
First day label PF70 presales (PCGS & NGC) are listed on fleaBay around $368.
Oddly - given it's still available from the mint - actual fleaBay (pre)sales of raw coins range from $160 to $200.
If you think it's "oddly," just go buy 100 from the Mint and make yourself a quick $10K. Again, the buyers from $160 to $200 are dealers and others wanting to obtain quantity. Not a bunch of dummies who only want one and don't know the Mint runs a retail website.
As soon as the HHL is lifted, they will no longer be available from the Mint. Not "oddly" at all. Just the market doing its thing.
If sales continue at this steady rate, should be dark by September 3rd.
I believe @NJCoin said the HHL will not be lifted for the laser ASE's.
Sometimes it's hard to tell what the Mint is going to do with these current modern issues.
Lift the HHL? Not lift the HHL? HHL=2? HHL=x?
edited to add: @NJCoin do you agree that these coins will be unavailable within say 10 days?
I'm flattered by the confidence, but I honestly have no idea. There is no doubt that at some point the HHL will be lifted. It always is.
Even the American Liberty lifted it after 24 hours, as is the norm. These are an exception to that general rule, similar to the Army privy.
But the Army privy had different sales action, with multiple sell outs followed by multiple replenishing of large quantities to ATS coming from orders the Mint was constantly canceling. All on a pre-order basis, since the Mint did not have them ready to ship.
This time around, they started shipping immediately, it hasn't yet sold out even once, and sales seem to be steady. No way for us to know whether or not they have another 40K ready to reload, as they did on the first Army reload, or whether it's a much smaller number of canceled orders that they have been adding back all along.
All we know for sure is that the HHL WILL be lifted at some point. And that they will absolutely sell out when that happens. Whether they go Unavailable at any point before that happens is an open question. As is whether additional large amounts will be added back to ATS before that happens.

I believe the 2009-14 proof platinum eagles had privies.
Edited to include 2014
Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.
What was the privy? I don't remember that.

I wasn’t gonna do it……
But me and 1000 of my closest friends changed our collective minds:

The Mint employee said the HHL would be in place for 14 days.
Not sure how accurate her information was…

Sales are still moving along at a steady clip, even with HHL at 1.
I see no reason for these not to go dark within 2 weeks time.
Unless of course the HHL is lifted! 😉
