Canada mint started selling coins with privy more than 30 years ago.

The Romans used them 2000 years ago. The UK mint has used them for centuries.

So is this really a new thing for US coinage? Are there any other coins besides 2020's V75? Was that the start here?

The first use of it was the arrows at the date in the 19th century, I think. The Grant with star would be another instance.

You could also argue that mint marks are a form of privy mark. They were usually symbols, but indicating the Mint of origin was one of the uses of them.

I believe the 2009-14 proof platinum eagles had privies.
    Edited to include 2014

Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.

What was the privy? I don't remember that.

23K is a lot to be left, whether or not people have been gaming them. It will be interesting to see whether they lift the HHL tomorrow at the same time they put the American Liberty on sale.

EDIT: I just looked at the press release, and there is no reference to the HHL only being in effect for the first 24 hours, like they usually have. No way they are going to lift it during the American Liberty frenzy at noon.

I'm amazed, my coin has shipped will be here Monday.

HHL still at 1....should be lifted IMO.

So is this moving a bit faster than the Army privy? It certainly is much smoother in terms of distribution. I am surprised at the interest in this coin, but I guess we will see why when it gets here,

    No.

It has nothing to do with this coin, other than it's an ASE. There is a dedicated group of ASE collectors.

ats is a bit over 10k, HHL still 1 this morning.

First day label PF70 presales (PCGS & NGC) are listed on fleaBay around $368.

Oddly - given it's still available from the mint - actual fleaBay (pre)sales of raw coins range from $160 to $200.

If you think it's "oddly," just go buy 100 from the Mint and make yourself a quick $10K. Again, the buyers from $160 to $200 are dealers and others wanting to obtain quantity. Not a bunch of dummies who only want one and don't know the Mint runs a retail website.

As soon as the HHL is lifted, they will no longer be available from the Mint. Not "oddly" at all. Just the market doing its thing.

The Mint employee said the HHL would be in place for 14 days.

Not sure how accurate her information was…

    Still available...

https://www.usmint.gov/on/demandware.store/Sites-USM-Site/default/Product-Variation?pid=25EALE - 2025 Laser Engraved American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin - has a bit over 17k available but the HHL is still 1.

Interestingly, the other item this week, https://www.usmint.gov/on/demandware.store/Sites-USM-Site/default/Product-Variation?pid=25DB - American Liberty 2025 Silver Medal - is sold out, HHL says "no limit"

Sales are still moving along at a steady clip, even with HHL at 1.

I see no reason for these not to go dark within 2 weeks time.

Unless of course the HHL is lifted! 😉
