Does anyone know if the "micro s" designation was recognized before this coin was slabbed? The "s" does not look close to the leaf as with the regular "s".

The micro S is a little smaller, I think. This coin was bought unattributed, and re-slabbed with micro S attribution.

The "s" in the micro sticks out on top.
I think the regular S is "rounded", and the micro S has serifs.
Aside from the details of the S, does anyone know the answer to the original question? (When did NGC - and PCGS for that matter - begin including the micro S attribution?)

I compared my 1945-S regular S to my 1945-S micro S (both pieces are uncirculated) and note that the only difference in the S is that the regular S has thicker serifs. Size of the S is the same to my eyes. micro S designation implies the s used for it is smaller but that is not really the case.

My 1961 Red Book doesn’t have a listing for it, but I have The Official 1981 Blackbook Price Guide of United States Coins that does.
There are a couple of recognizable names who contributed to the book.

Is there a book on the contemporaneous detection of varieties, ie when they happened and when they started to be promoted as a "rare" variety? Thanks!
