How would you value this coin? A pricing exercise

U1chicagoU1chicago Posts: 6,563 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here is an interesting coin that I ran across recently (did not win). It is in an old Hallmark slab and a much better date than one normally sees in a non top 5 (PCGS/NGC/Anacs/ICG/CACG) holder. Hallmark called it PQ and it has survived in the old holder. If you were trying to price this coin, what would you do? Based on the photo (that is all I have), would you consider it PQ for the grade, acceptable, or overgraded? And how would that impact your pricing?

Here are some guide numbers from Heritage as a reference

Based on the info you provided, I would value it no less than $2,000. But I am not a Morgan collector and am not a good grader. It looks as good or better than the PCGS ms63 I own, based on your pics.

I would hope I had a lot of room in it.

I don’t like the reverse dark spot. I wonder if that would make it a tough sell. I do think the coin overall quite nice.

As it’s big ticket item / It needs to be in PCGS or CACG holder to have any good shot bring the money.

I would price it (once in PCGS or CACG holder) relative CPG but take 90pct to move it if haggling. I consider the obv PQ but the reverse essentially ok. My confidence level it would make 63 with PCGS or CACG is high but not 100 pct.

I was watching that set, and came this close to pulling the trigger based on retail at a 63, and possibly a 64. But that's a gamble I didn't want to take. The winner shouldn't lose money if cracked & submitted (all coins), and may break even or better? The other coins look good too, so there's that. ($3487.50 for 10 coins)
Hallmark was co founded by Q David Bowers, so for me there was some confidence in the grade on the holder for all coins in the group.
GC also had reasonable confidence with the grades on the holders.
Not the best pics, and the spot/stain on the back of the Morgan was an issue as well.
I think it could get a 63 or better if sent in, and I may be wrong...

The photos suggest the coin is a possible upgrade contender, however, I suspect there is more going on with the cheek and left obv field than is showing. But still a top level 63 so; from only these photos; I'd value it $2,950 as the seller and $2,400 as a buyer.

I was trying to avoid posting the exact details to not bias the results. I was following that lot too. It was a weird way to sell this group in my opinion as the coins didn't really belong together, besides all being Hallmark slabbed. I would have figured it would be best to try to cross the Morgan and then sell the other 9 coins as a lot if the consigner didn't want a lot of work but a potentially larger return. And there might even be a case to split the lot even more into common and less common coins.

    Sorry about that, not intentional.

No worries; I don't mind and it might bring some more comments on the listing that I wanted to discuss anyways.

When I first saw this I was thinking cac pricing as an MS63, but if in hand analysis showed it to be a shot 64, somewhere in between, maybe 2/3.

Not in the "right" slab" and no sticker. ... any offer would be low enough to cover the risk involved in buying such a coin and incurring additional costs to have it slabbed and stickered. No premium would be offered for the Hallmark slab.

    All glory is fleeting.
