MAC sticker. What is this sticker all about?

I sent a group of 30 odd coins to GC and they asked my permission to remove this sticker as it was not an approved application. Didn't know I sent a coin with this sticker. I've not heard of it.

MAC, or Modern Approved Coin, is a modern-only sticker. Not reputable as far as I know.

How far back does it consider modern? This coin was a 1940 5c PCGS MS-66 FS.

MAC was a good read in 2015 and even got BNB some mentions.

    Check out the CW article.

At launch, "modern" started at 1960. However, the "grade enhancement" categories, at least the examples listed in the article, started earlier.

    These are interesting.
It seems like the purveyor of these stickers manages to command a steep premium for MAC stickered coins. How they find customers I do not know but evidently they do. They charge more than I would ever pay. In the resale market, the market places little or no value on the stickers from what I can tell.

From my experience, their stickers are usually found on "correctly" and top graded modern coins. You could say they sticker "A" and "B" coins but in my experience a MAC stickered NGC coin may still fail to cross to PCGS.

I own two of these. Both are Ireland republic (1928-68), which is not modern even where world coinage is concerned. That said, while the sticker and associated claim were far from a thought when purchased, I must admit the quality is high within the grade. Along the lines of a star or plus designation. Both were EBAY purchases using the make an offer, which was roughly ten percent less of the opening. Knowing what these upper mint state grades trend at, my cost was actually a bargain rather than a premium which many assume they bring. Now this may be different on the more popular and collectible U.S. coinage, which I can not attest to. The bottom line, I think they are a reputable, honest dealer with a keen eye on qualty. Just my opinion.

I have read or been told from multiple sources that Alan Hager is involved with the MAC operation. If you are not familiar with that name he was the owner of ACG the now defunct grading service that was involved in multiple lawsuits.

I bought one and paid NO premium for the sticker, then removed it.

Auction firms should just leave the MAC, CMQ, Eagle Eye, or any other legitimate stickers on the slabs. Let the new owners decide if they want to remove them or not.

I guess each individual company has judgements as to what is its acceptable standards and some pass and some do not.

Why can't the current owner decide how they want to frame it for sale?

So you're saying this sticker supply is fixed and therefore rare and collectible...

The current owner did decide when they left the sticker on before they sent it to the auction house.

I believe this topic was already fully hashed out in that other thread.

Perhaps they did or didn't. But they were asked by the auction house about removing it. At that point, they can decide.

I have a coin with a MAC sticker, to be honest, I was going to peel it off. I thought it was the sellers store.

I have a few of those, even the Eagle Eye. Too bad they didn't add any extra value or weight to the grading and crossovers they became. This 1983-P Roosevelt is MS67 and is in the #1 set, 1983 Mint Set. I'd love to replace it with Full Bands someday. According to PCGS, there's one MS67+ 10C and 38 MS67. There's only 2 MS67FB. It is "finest" sorta.

  • jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,615 ✭✭✭✭✭

I totally respect an Eagle Eye opinion.
The only MAC label I have held inhand was overgraded by both PCGS and MAC. JMO

I would send your Dole banana to Chiquita first to see if it'll cross.
