Unusual ways to store coins….saw a new one today.

I’ve bought a lot of collections in a wide variety of containers including a dirty sock, cans and jars of all types, pill bottle galore, crown royal bags. Everything.
This collection I’m appraising has D battery shells full of nice walking liberty halves. No corrosives seem present and I’m sure the batteries were contemporary with when the coins were put up.
Never seen it before.

Very cool! I would be tempted to buy a "roll" of these halves just for the battery "sleeve", if they ever were put up for sale.

That's a new one on me!
Found some wheats stored in an expended shotgun shell once, but never seen the battery covers. Are they metal or paper? The wheats were in horrid shape after being stored with the residue of gunpowder.
Many of these are uncirculated coins. The rims a bit dull looking but no green or black spots. I’m going to work on the collection again so we’ll see if they’re all that way.
What was the latest date found in those? That might roughly indicate the battery year.
