Advice 1926 memorial coin

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,613 ✭✭✭✭✭

My dad passed away last month at the age of 99. I would like to get a 1926 dated coin in his memory. What coin would you recommend in the $500 price range. I already have a 1926 Peace Dollar. TIA

Did he have a strong connection to his ancestors' country of origin? A nice foreign coin might be a relatively inexpensive addition to the group.

    P.S. - Condolences. 99 was a heck of a run.

Thanks, I never even thought of a commemorative coin. I'll have to look into that.

A nice 1926 Indian $2.5 gold coin in AU can be had for under $500. This series has been heavily counterfeited so I would suggest one slabbed by a major grading service.

Sorry to hear that. My dad was also born in 1926 and passed last year at age 98.

1926 was the Sesquicentennial of the United States. Lots of classic commemorative coins out there. The Oregon Trail is one of my favorites.

Our sincere sympathy for your loss.

I would consider the Oregon Trail Commem- I suspect you could find a nice one. The choice becomes more of a challenge if you open it up to World Coins

The Italian 1926 10 Lire coin would be a reasonable choice- a classic look

If you have one for $500 I would be interested.

Yeah, sorry, didn't see that stipulation originally.

He said "in the $500 price range" so your suggestion won't work for him.

Definitely a Standing liberty quarter. 1926 in full head or 1926 D regular. $500 should get you a near gem or maybe even a gem.

Edited to remove post. Didn't check first to see if a $5.00 1926 was produced. Misstep on my part.

@ajaan, so sorry for the passing of your father Don. What about a 1926 $5.00 Indian? It certainly will be more than your allotted 500, but what the heck. He was your dad and lived a long, long life. I’d go for it, as a tribute to him. Zack.

They didn't make any gold $5 in 1926 which is why I suggested getting a gold $2.5.

Thanks for all the replies. My wife, who was very close to my dad, likes the $2.50 Sesqui coin. I'll probably go with that. Now's the difficult part, finding one we'll like at our price.

Oops my bad. Thanks for the correction. That was just dumb on my part, because I knew better. Thanks for the correction, @PerryHall.

I have the Sesqui $2.50 in my collection. Messaged you. Wasn’t really looking to sell it, but if you twisted my arm, maybe.
