Best cherrypick of the year so far - 1937 Washington Quarter DDO (FS-101)
Good morning, everyone!
Just wanted to share this cool piece I picked up at a show this past weekend. It's a variety I've been trying to cherrypick for quite a while, but I never expected to find one - much less one that looks this nice. I guess it still shows that wonderful varieties are still out there, raw, waiting to be found.
Now that I have a really good reason to put together a PCGS grading submission, I suppose at some point in the future I'll update the post with the results.
(I'm still on the lookout to cherrypick the 1971 S Silver Proof Ike DDR and the 1961 Silver Proof Franklin DDR, plus an UNC version of the 1946 Walking Liberty Half DDR...so I suppose I'll still keep looking hahaha...)

Wow. You found that raw ? I found a circulated one in a bag of “junk” silver, once. It graded low, but still. That is an excellent find.

🆒Haha...yep. I've found an awesome coin like this comes my way around every 5 years or so. Best foreign coin find was an UNC China 1932 "Birds over Junk" Dollar; best US variety find was an already slabbed MS67 1942 Walking Liberty Half DDR (unattributed variety.) I still wish I'd kept my 1970 "No S" Roosevelt Dime find, though...was such a cool thing to find hiding in a normal looking proof set. I wish the 1939 "Doubled Monticello" Jefferson Nickel (cherrypicked off eBay already in an MS66 slab) didn't have a corrosion spot RIGHT on the prime focal area of the DDR, or I would have kept that one.
Just goes to show there are still great varieties out there waiting to be found!

It's crazy how you can actually cherrypick a coin show!! I've even cherrypicked a real nice struck thru struck fragment from a local coin club auction. Old men apparently can't see the coins they're selling! 🤣 😉
The reason I was asking, it reminded me of a 39-S DDO MS65 I cherrypicked from my own collection. It was in my 32-64 Dansco for years. I broke it out of a straight graded PCGS slab years before. One day I decided to go back thru and double check the entire album with a fine tooth comb and found it. Crazy!!

I've tended to cherrypick my own collection from time to time, too - usually it means I acquired a piedfort version of a coin before I knew what piedforts were. Extra silver! (This has happened at least three times now.)

And, just like that, I've cherrypicked my own collection in the way you specify.
Was looking through for additional coins to send in with a submission, came upon a nice 1845 Seated Dime that's a RPD (I think it's the FS-108, as it has a pretty strong die clash on the reverse and the die crack going from the rim through UNITED, through the wreath to D of DIME. No die crack on the bottom reverse from the wreath to rim, though.)

I cherrypicked this from a local coin club auction several years ago. It was only listed as a raw 23-S. I think the opening bid was about $3.00. During the pre-auction review, I could see something was happening on the reverse of this coin.
I put the coin back down on the auction table and stood to the side watching. I watched other members picking the coin up and looking at it. I was looking and watching for their reactions to the coin. There was no real reaction from any of the other members. From the looks on the faces, they all thought it was damaged. I'm thinking to myself "NO WAY", that's not damage.
The auction started and I won the coin! I was the only bidder. I attributed the win to a bunch of old white guys that can't see. 🤣
After the auction I spoke to the seller. He insisted it was damaged. I just shook my head. I submitted it and went back to show him a few months later. He couldn't believe it. He just shook his head. 🤣 😉

Well, she's on her way to PCGS now along with that 1845 Dime (and a bunch of other cool stuff including a potential 1896 S Barber Quarter I found in a junk silver bin.)
Will make a submission results post once they come back. Went Gold Shield on every coin so should have TrueViews included. I'm excited!

B Every once in a while I look at a box of coins I haven’t seen in a bit and find something cool I didn’t know I had. Last few times it’s been that I had a piedfort version of a coin that I bought before I knew what piedforts were. Extra silver is what that means haha

You'd be surprised at all the varieties out there people, especially coin shops and dealers, never take the time to look for.
Most of them are so swamped with buying and selling gold and silver right now they don't even care about anything else. Not that I blame them...whatever pays the bills, pays the bills. Plus, more good coins for cherrypickers!

My first 1946 DDR walker came from a dealer on instagram. (it was listed as "choice unc" but was really a 58 - I didn't complain)
