The journey to America’s 250th continues. Last month, we kicked off the countdown to America’s Semiquincentennial with the announcement of the release of newly designed circulating coins in 2026. We also shared a first look at the first release in the Best of the Mint numismatic series — a historic reissue of five collector favorites struck throughout our Nation’s history. Today, we’re excited to share the second coin and medal set in our Best of the Mint series — a tribute to peace and vigilance, the 1916 Standing Liberty Gold Coin & Silver Companion Medal.

Maybe an eagle butt is fitting for the reverse. I am quite pleased with the liberty obverse. I would definitely be in for a set of gold/silver
It's ok, better than most of the junk the mint produces. My only complaint would be that the artist hasn't studied the golden ratio, which should be art101.

It very much has the appearance of an AI-generated design. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just looks similar stylistically.

Didn't the mint re-release this same gold coin in 2016? Why not choose a different design for 2026?

Not too shabby, I think it is a fine idea. The 9 in the date appears to be incuse, is that accurate? Just noticed the photoshop privy mark in the lower right field.
Best idea. I'll vote for a large size 1816 bust quarter because the mint failed to give us them in 1816.

The date should be 2026, not 1916. What's the point of putting 1916 on something that's getting released next year?
Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.
This release is lazy. Just like the gold Mercury dime this has already been done in 2016. They're are plenty available on the secondary market if you want one. Next up a half ounce gold Walker?
I don't see how repeating the designs from1916 and 2016 is at all relevant in 2026. The medal obverse is inspiring. The medal reverse is just plain dumb and quite embarrassing.

If I wanted a similar obverse design (for the silver), I'd prefer the Britannia obverse:

In addition to issuing 5 special Best of the Mint numismatic coin and medal sets (of which the Standing Liberty quarter is 1 of the 5), the U.S. Mint announcement also says that it will release newly designed circulating coins in 2026. Maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll release a cool coin.
I think the 250th anniversary of our nation is a big deal, so let’s hope the Mint doesn’t screw up their one chance at this with subpar products.

Let me confirm that I understand what is being said in this thread.
I know that, in 2016, the U.S. Mint issued gold centennial versions of the Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter and Walking Liberty half dollar. The 2026 companion silver coins mentioned in this thread are meant to be “companions” to the 2016 gold coins, correct?
Or is there an expectation that the 2016 gold coins will be re-struck again in 2026 (and dated 2026) as companions to the 2026 silver coins?

the 2026 gold version can be seen in the 1st post, it'll release with the 1916 date and the 250 liberty bell privy.
also releasing a high relief st gaudens similar to 2009 but not ultra high relief from what I can tell

I, too, am not thrilled with the 2016 gold repeats. The Mint should have started using those designs for the fractional eagles and called it a day.
