As a high end comic collector of golden age books, and someone just getting into precious metals, I'm their target buyer. This was going to bring me into gold and have been excited for over a month to buy one. But this price is silly. No thanks from me. Not that cool. Not that unique.
buy bullion gold from a bullion dealer. american gold eagles or gold buffaloes
for this, if you want something, i recommend the 2.5 ounce silver
Thank you for this. I'm looking for something with a little more rarity, but admittingly don't understand mint rarities. 10,000 (for gold) and 25,000 (for the 2.5 silver) don't seem low, but this is what I need to learn. Even as a big Superman fan, I just don't have the feeling that I'd be missing out if I just pass.
10K is typical for numismatic gold. A little low for a half ounce, but it's priced very high. 25K for silver anything is low.

if you are a gold going higher person, just be aware the premiums decline the more gold goes up. if this gold is popular, it may take many years for the premium to get a several percent over melt value
i cannot think of another gold with both desirability and scarceness to recommend. watch the mint's website, sign up for their email, and check the numismatic news because we get about 2 years notice of mint ideas.
next year is the 250th party of the country. there will be a wide range of products, though i'm nt sure if they will be scarce. just because people fight over initially doesn't mean desirability will hold up over the years.

I predict with 35 minutes left before the gold goes on sale that they’ll be sold out in the same amount of time : about 35 minutes. While I do not typically make such predictions, something tells me 10,000 will be gone faster than a speeding bullet.
And they've loaded less than 5k for sale, so it'll probably be even faster.
I guess if they only actually sell 5K they could be winners, but they are STILL very expensive!

Can't be confirmed that quick, can it?
You're right, of course. My mistake. I was confusing order placed with order confirmed.
What do you think of these if they played games and are only going to release 5K?
Or, because DC is involved, do you think they will go to Back Order on them and sell the full 10K if they can?
It's a pre-order. If there's demand, they will probably try to mint the rest. It's not exactly a game. There's just no point in making coins you can't sell.

Agreed. But, since it's a pre-order, nothing stopped them from loading the full 10K.
Everything is a game with them since they started announcing mintages they never had any intention of producing.

True. But hard to say what their schedule looks like and what the availability of planchets is.

They've sold more of the silver, but there's still 15000+ silver left and the 5000 gold are almost gone (600-ish left)
I'm guessing people are cluing into the fact that there might only be 5K gold, so they are jumping in, with an intent to cancel if the other 5K show up later.

Agreed. It would have never occurred to me to question their willingness and desire to sell up to the stated mintage. At least not before what they did last year with both FH releases. Now, who knows?
But, if they have no intent to make 10K, they should have stated that up front. All I know is that they are shipping them later regardless. And, if they load an additional 5K later, they could have loaded them now. We'll see.
All I do know is that some folks are going to be PISSED if these end up being winners at $2700 because they only make half of the stated maximum mintage, and sell out in 30 minutes when they could have sold more.

Down to 500, but orders are at a crawl at this point.
Silver hardly selling at all. I did buy one of the 2.5 oz silver, just because.
As expected, however, I don' t think either of these are going to be winners.
The comic art is a new product. I don't think they know what will transpire in pre-order. I think that is all that is happening.
It's a nice looking medal. I'm still on the fence.
I wish they would have detailed the motor better on the pickup.

You might be right. I'm very surprised people didn't jump on the silver.
As for the gold, TBD. I said from the get-go that a $2K per ounce premium was insane at a 10K mintage. I also actually said there was a number between 230 and 10K where it would make sense, and that I wasn't sure whether 5K would be that number. I guess we'll see very soon.
Aftermarket starting to see sold pre-sales. Not too far over the retail though. In any news I believe this is good for the Sac coming out next week, almost $500 cheaper than this one.

Is it? How many less than 5K will they be offering for sale? Is Sac really more popular than Superman?
I never understood why the Mint would have no Product Limit on these when they have a Mintage Limit. Usually it's the other way around.
Any sense on whether they might be holding 5K back here for inclusion in a 3 coin set? Any insight at all on why they would not release for sale everything that they want to sell?

I like Superman
Didnt really read the comics
watched the old Christopher reeve movies
liked the dean cain version
caught smallville from time to time
still watch the reruns w/ george reeves on saturday
Also... I never was a big fan of the Sacajawea dollar as a whole
Thought the Cherio Dollar 'pattern' was neat
read about the original dozen produced in gold, though that was neat (they went to space and back)
actually excited to see a public gold offering...
...sooo to me, a coin collector , the gold sacajawea dollar is more popular that this superman coin.
Comments
Of course, GOLDBully!
And you?
I bit the bullet and got gold.
Closing in on 1,500 left
I'm sure... especially if they hook plenty of buyers with this issue.
No. It is what it is. A 9 coin series, subject to a third party licensing deal. It's not changing.
Now I am happy I bit the bullet with @MilesWaits onboard! ☺️

Under 1,000 left now.
How do you determine this? Is there a secret?
yes

In the bag but just could not purchase. Cannot justify the premium.
Box of 20

ok, you're the mint: do you put more gold on-sale?
my ans: no
If you're the mint: Yes. If you're the collector/investor: please no
76 minutes to run out today.
edited to add: Over 10k 2.5oz medals sold so far.
And now the mystery of the "other 5000" begins.

obviously I'm biased but I believe this represents the more accurate spread in the market after the sellout
how trustworthy are the users on that site?

Looks like put the other 5k up for sale. I bet they get a boatload of cancellations now!
I will say, I do like the reverse, maybe the mint should do medals with pickup trucks on them

How about NASCAR medals! Richard Petty deserves a US Minted coin/medal ;-)

The mint undercounted the gold numbers in inventory on purpose.
Also, my guess is 50k one ounce silver medals, but they may be low.
If the price of gold was to drop dramatically, many would cancel as they are locked in for almost two months.
