The Purple Shirt Charlton Heston is wearing tells me that photo was taken the week preceding Northwestern's visit to the Rose Bowl. Heston, a Northwestern alum, hosted the Northwestern Football Team at Universal Studios.

    Very cool Twobit
I used to live in Delaware many years ago, and have been to the Blue Rock’s stadium.

Earlier this week I was privy to remarks directed to students of Mikuni International College in Japan where I had once taught. The remarks were on the subject of setting and accomplishing goals. The speaker, Neal Doying, shared his personal experience of setting goals to learn to play the guitar and then to write songs. He then shared with us one of the songs he had written and which he subsequently just posted on YouTube in response to my inquiry asking if it could be shared with others.

Link to Video of the Song "Witness Trees" written and performed by Neal Doying with Karina and Lindsey Reyes and linked here with permission:

My photos taken, in the words of the song, as a "pilgrim from far," to the setting of the "Witness Trees" a/k/a "The Sacred Grove" located in Palmyra New York:

The reconstructed house from which the song's "humble seeker" departed to enter the nearby grove to pray:

    Lyrics to the song, Witness Trees" which according to the author were inspired by learning that some of the trees in the Sacred Grove are more than 200 years old and would have likely stood as witness to the "light glorious and bright" seen there in 1820 by the "humble seeker" who came there to pray;

    The seasons turn
    The years roll by
And we have all grown old
    And to our children's children
    Our story we have told:

    We saw the light
    Glorious and bright
    Hallelujah
    We were there.

    We stand as witnesses
    With lives written in rings
    Of that morning long ago
    Our souls rise to sing:

    We saw the light
    Glorious and bright
    Hallelujah
    We were there.

    Just a humble seeker
    On his knees in prayer
    Now the world's changed forever
    And we declare:

    We saw the light
    Glorious and bright
    Hallelujah
    We were there.

Pilgrims come from far and near
    To ponder and to pray
With a voice small and still
    This is what we say:

    We saw the light
    Glorious and bright
    Hallelujah
    We were there.

In Shinto, Japan’s original religion, Nature is revered and at least some trees are identified as having a Spirit or Soul.

In this video taken at Kirishima Jinju Shrine on the island of Kyushu one such tree is so identified by its wrapping with a straw rope.

Beyond simply being a tree with a Spirit, this particular tree is revered for the natural image found on one of its branches that resembles an ancestral Diety of Jimmu, Japan’s first Emperor , and is for this added reason sacred to the Shinto religion.

My Concurrently taken Photo of the Sacred Spirit Tree at Kirishima Jinju Shinto Shrine:

In addition to trees with Spirits of their own, Japan’s original religion , Shinto, reveres other objects from Nature such as this stone.

The moss covered stone seen in this video at Kirishima Jinju Shrine on the island of Kyushu is of added significance as it is believed to be the same boulder described in Japan’s National Anthem.

My concurrently taken photo of the Stone Sung of in Japan's National Anthem:

JAPAN'S NATIONAL ANTHEM, WHICH HAPPENS TO BE THE WORLD'S SHORTEST, AND ONE OF THE WORLD'S OLDEST, NATIONAL ANTHEM:

Kimigayo, Japan's National Anthem translated to English:

    May your reign
Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations,
    Until the tiny pebbles
    Grow into massive boulders
    Lush with moss

(Th above lyrics are from a Poem written during Japan's Heian Period that lasted from 794 AD to 1185 AD)
