Has the Mint gone privy crazy? The latest in the ever growing privy mark trend is going to be.... a LASER BEAM? I kid you not...
Coming up in a few short weeks, no image revealed yet, a mysterious laser beam privy..
Not to be confused with the Army, Marine, and Navy privy marks, this has been labeled just simply "laser beam".
I believe it will have a W mintmark, but not sure if it will be burnished or just regular.
What's next? Privy marks with assorted finishes? Reverse Proof Privy, Enhanced privy, Colorized Privy, Hologram Privy????

I agree with the bit about gimmickry....The British Royal Mint has really gone down that rabbit hole and the Canadian long since. This has not surprisingly diluted their brands....

Not sure if it is relevant, but the name of the item has changed from "laser beam privy mark" (OP) to "laser engraved" (screenshot below).
I will buy one when the outhouse privy mark is released, and it plays the sound of Archie Bunker's toilet flush.

Thanks MetroD....the mystery is over...and CascadeChris was pretty much right on the money!! And I wonder why they changed the name?? LOL....maybe they didn't like me poking fun at it!!! Laser Beam sounded so cool though...might as well call it Enhanced.

Pure speculation on my part, but it MIGHT BE that they actually plan to laser engrave the symbol on the coin.
Time will tell.

This speculation turned out to be incorrect. IOW, I was wrong.
The Mint 'laser engraved' the master tooling, not the coin itself. See the info from @Rc5280, as well as an excerpt from a CW article, posted down thread.
Is it a possibility that the entire coin is laser engraved?.......Stay tuned.

What is the best laser for engraving coins?
You need a fiber Galvo laser. The more power, the faster it will engrave to a point. A 20w will cost $2-3K, and a 100W will be $8-10K. From a business perspective, a 60W would be the sweet spot. If the coins didn't work out, you can still make good money marking other metal items.
I believe the Mint can afford the best out there.

The Master Dies have been laser engraved, this will be the first for the ASE's, so they're celebrating(marketing) the event.
The first fully laser engraved Dies were used for the 2024 FHG.
Cancelled out Privy Die #1 ⇓ $440K (coin included)...

I think that's how I stumbled upon that tidbit myself, in passing somewhere, it stuck with me, and makes sense.
So if this will be the first of the ASE's to use laser engraved master tooling, which ASE would be considered the last to use "old school" die tooling methods? - well, the Army Privy according to the schedule?
After the laser privy comes the S-Proof, Marine & Navy privy ASE's. Will those be laser engraved coins too? I can only assume yes when she said "all subsequent programs moving forward(2026 and beyond) will incorporate this technology", but can't be positive?

This whole "first" ASE privy ''laser tooling'' promotion might have some collectors interested once again with a mintage at 100k.
Should the Mint follow the same release strategy(HHL 1 throughout) as they did with the Army privy?
The Army privy has become a bizarre & puzzling release.
I believe that the laser ASE is next in line. What could the Mint do differently moving forward?
Other than frustrating those of us anxious to get their hands on quantity to flip, they did nothing wrong here. Big Boys got their ~10%. Retail got their 1, 2, 3, whatever.
And pigs were denied the opportunity to scarf up dozens or hundreds of them, and to force actual collectors, rather than dealers paying 2x in order to sell at 3-4x+ after slabbing, to have to pay up just to get one.
As a result, I think the Mint will do this again. At least until the excitement wears off and people are no longer chasing them.
I'll be honest -- I really don't understand the point behind the laser privy. The Mint has already been shown that they can't just make 100K of silver anything and sell it out at $100/oz. See the burnished ASE for an example.
So I honestly don't know what's going to happen with the laser. I think they'll do the same thing, but I don't expect the same level of interest. In which case the HHL will be lifted, like usual. We'll see.
Same with the next two military privys. They'll follow this model, unless and until they get to a point where they have to loosen up in order sell all that they make.
I'm a lot more interested to see whether they can sell 10K 1/2 ounce gold Superman coins at $5400 per ounce than what they do with HHLs on privy ASEs.

Today was the day, waiting room was set up, timers were set, waiting time at noon EST was 15 minutes, which in reality was about 10 minutes, the site was not clogged up like some previous sales, picked one up with ease and 7 hours later...theyre still for sale. Is PRIVY MANIA over already? Had enough? Not a lot of interest in a Laser Privy? How about a smiley face one?

Canada mint started selling coins with privy more than 30 years ago.
The Romans used them 2000 years ago. The UK mint has used them for centuries.

So is this really a new thing for US coinage? Are there any other coins besides 2020's V75? Was that the start here?
