2009 Lincoln questions

PapiNEPapiNE Posts: 365 ✭✭✭✭

My middle son keeps egging me to open these but so far I've resisted. Other than some varieties, I really know nothing about them other than a limited mintage compared to other years.
-Did the mint sell these in rolls and are these it?
-While value now is minimal, are they best left rolled to increase value going forward?
-Do you/others collect them?

Right now I'm leaning towards unwrapping, separating the finest, and placing all in plastic tubes. Most are in excellent shape. Any info appreciated.

Might open one for the fun of it with your son. Save the rest. However, just remember that almost everone was saving these rolls. Me too.

good luck, and yes the extra "finger" or thumb is a nice variety to search for.
I'll let someone else search them when I'm dead and gone, probably!

    bob :)
If I open any of mine, it will be the tails, tails example with no writing that is legible on it.

Feed the beast. It does not matter much. They’re not hard to replace. Yes, they sold the mint wraps

    1. those are obw - original bank wrapped / regarding mint rolls, see the comments and pics below
    2. people trade rolls based upon what they hope, but don't know, is inside. hope adds a premium / look on ebay for "sold" auction results
    3. what is important is how do you want to collect them? just keep in mind you have 1 roll P&D for each. once opened, there's no going back. can't put the genie back into roll.

as far as varieties, the 2009 issues come with a lot of doubled die varieties - especially the "formative years." finding doubled dies can be easy or tricky. look on ebay "sold" listing to get an idea of what some of them look like
    https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw="2009"+cent+formative+(doubled,+double,+ddo,+ddr,+dd)&_sacat=11116&_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_odkw=(box,+boxes)+mint+"2009"+cent&_osacat=11116&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1

    .

**there are boxes that the mint sold. each white box contains 1 roll each of P&D issue LP1-4 (LP5 is new 2010 rolls)
**enough people have opened boxes such that the date & times with the bestt shot at finding varieties are known. i don't have this info and it'll be a tough find. there is a forum thread here with it on there but i can't think of a way to find it effortlessly by me. a gogle search might help. this forum's search function is confounding and mostly useless.
**these are rolls sold too. if you ever buy, you want an original mint sealed box. you know the coins haven't been picked over first. the boxes cost more - hope

I bought 5 boxes of each series from the mint. There were soo many found with minor varieties that I just kept them in their boxes and decided they weren't worth messing with. Lol

Those were hoarded in huge numbers. Future appreciation ... doubtful.

@MsMorrisine Great info. Thank you. I was really wondering what the mint wrappers looked like and didn't know they also came in box sets. I think I'll be getting a few. The actual dates and times of minting is interesting.

I didn't realize these were so common. The wraps will be coming off. Let the variety search begin. Thanks to all who commented.

2009 was a year for low mintages. I'm not sure about the Lincoln anniversary series since they were highly anticipated to be collected. But for nickels dimes and even quarters, they were low mintage years.

    According to CoinMintage.com:
"Mintages for the 2009 Lincoln Cents were at extremely low mintages relative to the prior Lincoln Memorial Cent. In addition to the excitement about the new designs, collectors had to contend with much fewer coins to go around and more fragmented distribution. These factors provided an instant allure to the series, likely causing more quantities than normal to be saved from circulation.

    2009 Bicentennial Lincoln Cent Notes:
Each of the four different designs were produced for circulation at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. This makes for a total of 8 regular issues for the one year series.
The highest mintage coin was the 2009-P Formative Years Lincoln Cent at 376,000,000.
The lowest mintage coin was the 2009-P Presidency Lincoln Cent at 129,600,000.
The average mintage across the eight different issues of the series was 294,250,000. This compares to an average mintage of more than 4 billion for the prior Lincoln Cent series.
Across all circulation strike issues for the 2009 Lincoln Cents, there were 2,345,600,000 coins produced. This compares to total circulating coin production of more than 400 billion for the prior Lincoln Memorial Cents.
The San Francisco Mint also produced Proof versions for the 2009 Lincoln Cents that each have a mintage of 2,995,615.

So, there you go. Lower mintages, unique designs. I wish I had a few rolls in my roll box. Better yet a graded example of each of the 3 designs and three mints. I guess there must be a registry set for that.

I had no idea there were that many varieties of one of the designs (the formative years). Those log cabin errors are subtle, and not visible to the naked eye. (at least not mine). Good think I have a coin microscope.

  • From what I have seen is that there were a few different variants in the bank wrapped rolls and in the mint wrapped rolls I received, and seen from others here. I too have boxes of the BWR FY coins and I've opened a few to see that there were some in those that I wasn't finding in the mint wrapped rolls. Have lots of fun searching them.

If you follow the old thread with the date stamps you can be certain that some of the rolls contain DDR's. I bought up a bunch on Ebay and found if you strayed you would not find them but if you did the exact dates and times some rolls would be nearly all DDR's of some sort. I linked the thread above.
