PPFF, Zelle, Money order accepted.
1986 $5 (×2) – 0.2419 oz each → 0.4838 oz × $3,348.50 = ≈ $1,619
1909 $2.5 Indian Head – 0.1209 oz × $3,348.50 = ≈ $405
1838 $2.5 – 0.13270064 oz × $3,348.50 = ≈ $444
1984 $10 – 0.4837 oz × $3,348.50 = ≈ $1,619
1834 $5 – 0.2654 oz × $3,348.50 = ≈ $889
Total AGW: 1.4865 oz ⇒ Total at spot: ≈ $4,976
For posterity I'm quoting what the scammer had up for sale along w/ proof photo
note: couldn't even spell username correctly.
I did reach out to request additional photos, glad I saw the comments here afterwards
Same here. I also asked for more photos. Glad I didn't buy. literally reaching for my cash lol

I should also mention that I had an interesting interaction with recbball, whose account may also oddly be compromised. recbball initially commented that the OP was legit, then immediately replied, "Russel12 is hacked!"
I sent a private message asking about what tipped him off about Russell12's account being compromised, and the conversation took a strange turn. It is concerning to see so many hacked accounts popping up in just a week

This is how they operate on Facebook, they use scammer accounts to give positive feedback for other scam accounts trying to scam people.
This is more than a “change your password” type of situation, there are some talented hackers carrying out a coordinated racket on the BST here. Mods will need to look into it promptly and see what’s going on.

Aside from changing our passwords how do we protect ourselves?

Not being willing to accept paypal G&S is a huge red flag., but also just buy from people who are known and have references from real collectors/dealers.

I did not consider that. What a shame. Is there anyone else on the forum who has been hacked? I've bought from a few people here with no issues so far.

A few things could help verify the seller:
You could ask the seller to show a screenshot of an old notification from collectors universe in their email, if the scammer just changed it, they should have this. If you have any direct message history with them, you could have them find that one. This isn't foolproof though because some turn notifications off.
-ask for a "proof picture" , where the seller takes the item being sold and takes a picture of it next to a piece of paper with their name, date, and include a code word or your username...OR do this exact thing but with a coin in their collection that they've posted on the forum in recent times. In @Russell12's case, I might ask to see his 1875-s 20c piece on a proof pic, as a scammer might have the item they're selling, but not the coins in his personal colection.
-verify the destination for payment, ie zelle via phone number you could just ask that you can call that number to talk with the seller briefly. I think most of use would probably be able to tell if someone is not a coin collectors pretty quickly on a phone call. If it's email, just ask that they send the proof picture from that email.
Everyone might want to turn on notifications for direct messaging or even comments on starred posts. If you suddenly notice that youre no longer getting email notifications, you've probably been hacked.
Ultimately, the best method is to perform proper due diligence, and unless you're 100% certain theres no funny business, it may be best to use PayPal or Credit card to maintain at least one layer of protection. .If you're below 95% certainty, it may be best to hold off for the time being, thew way I see it, if a seller doesn't have time for a quick phone call or claims that any of these things are too inconvenient for them, then its a no-go. Most of us know there is no Santa Claus in numismatics...people dont sell gold at 70% of melt, classic head gold is not sold at melt, if it seems too good to be true theres a 99% chance that it is. When a seller seems too eager for me to send payment (immediately after verbal agreement, multiple messages within an hour), then I would hold off until I'm sure. I have to agree with Lanza here that at a time like this, the 3.5% few to use PayPal G&S could be well worth it, and if you're able to compound that with a credit card, you get two layers of protection and possible rewards points that negate most of the 3.5% fee. Until there's stronger security features implemented, proceed with caution and please do not abandon your common sense and risk $2000 to buy something 5 or 10% under market.
