Tennis is still pretty Popular around the World. 5.1 Million people watched the womens french Open Final in France alone. I think the most watched WNBA game here in the States drew 3.2 Million.

To summarize:
- The fan-base for WNBA games is not very large.
- Caitlin Clark increased interest.
- A recent injury to CC caused a noticeable drop in WNBA interest.
- Men seem to get excited from watching attractive/appealing women compete.
- Those men don’t seem to find that element of appeal watching CC or the WNBA in general.

I couldn't name two soccer players, but I think most everyone in the US has heard of Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Serena Williams.

I had never heard of Coco Gauff either until this thread.
I no longer watch or follow tennis. However when I did, I found the women's game more interesting to watch because of the longer rallies.

Right now Caitlan Clark is the current "flavor of the month" in the sports world. She gained her popularity because of the media and she'll lose it just as quickly when they stop covering her. It's nothing new. Her shelf life is probably four years dating from her senior year in the NCAA when she set the scoring record. That gives her one season after this and the novelty of her will start to fade.

The WNBA is much more watchable now than 20 or so years ago, and there are players other than CC that can ball, especially on the better teams. However, I recently watched a Dallas game to see Paige Bueckers and it was painful to watch the missed layups and brick jumpers from her teammates (poor Paige) - the crummier teams have a lot more room for improvement in quality of play.

This league is so amateurish on every level. The coach seems clueless about her injury status. I believe she has had this injury for awhile. She was left in their last game with the game decided and 45 seconds left, which is when she reaggravated it. Clown show.

Understanding the differences, but this situation reminds me a bit of Jackie Robinson when he broke the color barrier in MLB. Fortunately, that extreme wrong was finally righted. But Robinson suffered a lot of abuse for awhile when entering the league.
This situation with Caitlin is without question about skin color, and we all know it. The WNBA better put the hammer down on the hater players, or the league is going to lose the best thing by far that ever happened to them.
I may be wrong, but in my opinion that 1 for 23 with 3's may be telling. At least for right now, Caitlin has lost focus about this league. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if she decides to retire in the off season. Get married, decide to have children, etc. She already has plenty of money earned from endorsements, and could live happily ever after.
I wish her the best however it turns out, and whatever she decides.

Something to think about: are there really a lot more fights since Clark came into the WNBA or has her presence drawn attention to the league which has caused all the fans trying to be talked about?? It seems to me that when any high profile personality enters sports they get tested till they “stand up” and silence everyone. Has Clark ever fought back or stood up for herself??

Caitlin is wise to not be goaded into fights. Serious injury could occur, and it might be a career ending injury depending on the severity.
Even if she wasn't on the receiving end of say a punch to the face. Throwing a punch which is a muscle movement that she likely doesn't practice, could result in a rotator cuff tear which might jeopardize her career.

We disagree, as usual.
In all sports, whenever there is some sort of "fight" or whatever you want to term it players are expected to defend their teammates. That's why you see the bullpens empty in MLB, and why you see NFL players run to the pack when something breaks out. Athletes are like Fireman and other First Responders, they run towards the trouble, not away from it. If there's a fight or scuffle on the court and Clark doesn't help her teammates she won't last long and she'll be labeled a coward.

Bullpens coming in is largely for show. They slow jog and rarely get engaged. In the case of Clark shes almost always the target of the start of it

Equating athletes with firemen and first responders is one of the most bizarre analogies I've ever seen. It's hilarious, but thanks for the good laugh.
Your other comments are poorly thought out. Do you ever see quarterbacks in those scuffles? No. Do you ever see super-star baseball players, especially pitchers in those scuffles? Very rarely, and they are usually not in the forefront of it.
As you should know if you follow MLB, usually when a batter attacks a pitcher after being hit with a pitch, the catcher runs out and gets in front of the attacker to protect the pitcher. The catcher knows this is good business as these athletes are there to earn a living. The catcher and the rest of the team doesn't want a star pitcher to get hurt over a silly fight. It could cost them some serious money, perhaps missing the playoffs, etc.

As far as fighting in major team sports go no team wants their superstar in the fight even in the NHL where fighting is kind of legal. There was a time Crosby was getting targeting (not to the extent of Clark) and his teammates would step up and do the fights. Tatis got drilled by the Dodgers the teammates came out.
Clark is basically the Jordan/Lebron of the WNBA in terms of value. The last thing the team would want to see is her getting into fights. Its really the role of the average players to protect the superstars

Speaking of hockey and speaking of Clark. I recall NHL hall of famer Bobby Clarke was the same way. The Flyers two-time championship team was nicknamed the Broad Street Bullies. They didn't get that nickname from backing down from fights. But Clarke then, like Clark now, are too smart to get into fights and possibly get stupidly hurt. The Flyers team was smart to protect their star player, and Clarke was smart not to engage in fights.
BTW - Bobby Clarke is one of the most beloved players in sports history in the Philly area. Philly fans clearly understood why superstar players shouldn't risk injury getting involved in silly fights. Nobody ever called Bobby Clarke soft. He was tough as nails when it mattered, when he was on the ice scoring goals.
