Defected coin.

My grandson found this coin and hoped it was a mint error. I told him it was a damaged coin. But most likely not a mint error. (https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/editor/ay/degxd3dar0bb.jpg "")

Just a well damaged coin. How it happened is irrelevant, damage is damage and
unless you were there at the time it happened, you would never know the cause.
Still worth 10 cents though.
I noticed you collect paper money and seem fairly knowledgeable. If you can immediately understand the dollar below isn't a "printing error", then why would you have a hard time understanding what happened to the coin?
I call this a BATH coin: Beaten All To Hell.
Thats a PMD coin.

Parking lot effect
Throw a coin enough times, and suppose one day it lands on its edge.
Selected, inspected, detected, defected, neglected, and rejected. It's worth 10 cents though.
The verb “defect” has a different meaning than was intended here. FYI for some.
Did the OP say he thinks it's a mint error?

He seems unsure for some reason. I was just pointing out that it's easily determined with great certainty.
Comparing the coin and the bill is unfair. The damage to the coin does have the appearance of a die cud to someone unfamiliar with error coins.
...and the damage to the bill does have the appearance of cutting errors and ink obstruction to someone unfamiliar with error currency.
Or it could be that the comparison is completely fair, and there is no excuse for anyone to consider either example as anything but damage.
