Glen “GTG” Marhefka (1947-2025) RIP

CopperindianCopperindian Posts: 2,303 ✭✭✭✭✭

It’s with profound sadness to share the news of Glen’s passing earlier this week. One of the nicest men I’ve ever known, he was private, humble, respectful of others & a truly great friend & fellow collector. Glen was a native of Ohio, born in Cleveland & a graduate of Ohio State University (1969). Interestingly, he was a history major, just like myself. He spent years professionally as an industrial engineer, later joining the USPS, where he retired after 21 years of service.
He was an avid ping pong player until near the end of his life & a true environmentalist supporter. However, his real passion was coin collecting. Coincidentally, his area of specialty was IHC’s & FE’s, much like mine. I last saw him at this past January’s FUN, where we huddled behind a friends table & talked coins for close to two hours. I have to say I benefitted more from his vast knowledge than he did mine, but that didn’t matter to him as we enjoyed each other’s company that much.
Why “GTG”? I tagged him with that due to all he shared with me - Glen The Great! I’ll surely miss this great man & fellow collector!

I love Glen and he will be deeply missed. It’s gonna be weird not having him there, like a shadow, with a great esoteric newp to show off. If anybody gets in to that great big bourse in the sky, it’s him. See ya there, buddy!

Glen was always looking at varieties of Indian Cent, and trying to get the very best one available. Often he would find one in a better grade that he didn’t like as much as his, or a lower grade that he actually liked better. He kept a list with him so he knew what he had at all times. It was handwritten and small like the way I used to write phone numbers on my wallet list. It was covered in revisions. He also collected Mercury Dimes, and maybe some other series that didn’t really capture my interest. I could never quite figure out why a person with such adeptness in copper would devote time and resources to other things so definitively not copper but to each his own. He was just as enthusiastic describing his dime finds as with his Indian Cents so I’m sure he had quite a collection.

He exemplified the ethos of hard work and dedication.

So true Matt! Glen was a throwback too. If he couldn’t drive to a show, he wouldn’t go.

Sad to hear the news, I met glen many years ago at a coin show(I think pittsburg 2004) when I used to help steve elwood. I was at steves table when steve told me to go out to eat with Glenn and JT and get the inside scoop on some stuff steve was entertaining on buying from Glenn. Funny thing, were all talking about each series we each liked and Glenn happen to mention that he pursued higher end indian cents. I told him earlier at the show I happen to see two 1877's In PCGS 65 at Ricks table . Both were nice, one fabulous color, the other incredible strike. I said if I had to make a decision on which one to buy, there is no way I could decide, Glenn then said, you know Jim, I had the same dilema , so i bought them both and showed me the two coins he purchased from snow. Over the years i would see him at a show or two and chat a few. He had some killer stuff, he had an 1880 Shield nickel in PCGS OGH 64 that he bought from the peters and mohon girls at a show some years earlier , phenomonal coin. Probably been up graded a few times since then. he had sold some years back to buy a S-1 1856 Flyer that was darn nice as well. I've seen some of his other barbers, and such and just darn nice!!

I might add one additional funny thing, years ago we would all meet up in various hotel rooms to have a show and tell, Vern Sebby, JTD , Glenn, Kieth and a few others at times. Problem was Glen was cheap when it came for staying at a hotel. He would stay at a motel 6 like place or super 8 or worse. He be carrying about 100k+ worth of coins and staying in the cheapest dump you could fine to save a dollar. One time I was dropping him and JT back off after dinner, and about two doors down from thier rooms, somebody had been shot, cops all over the place.

@jdimmick: I know that 1856 S-1. He said it was going to be buried with him!
