Another round of bangers from Doug at NGC. All varieties are nice and clear in the images.

1779 FF/FM over-assayer

1797/6 FM overdate (discovery coin for this obverse die)

1804/3 TH - generally accepted as the overdate for this year.

1772-MF The scarcer of the two assayer combinations for this date

By the way, not a great trend for PCGS AFAIC. They keep refusing to properly attribute even the basic varieties, not to mention new discoveries where the variety is blatantly obvious (like the 1797/6 above). My recent PCGS order had 3 varieties, 2 documented in Yonaka and 1 new (all 3 confirmed with Brad) and 0 were attributed by our hosts.

Here's an example: this coin is a 1740/30-Mo MF 8 Reales (Yon-M8-40a). The 3 is very obvious under the 4. Sent it in as a reconsideration with an extra variety attribution fee and it came back as a 1740.

Really!!! No attribution? They have always been very helpful when I sought provenance or special considerations for coins.

  • Great to share! NGC has stepped up with their game on a random example---I brought a 1933 or Year 22 Junk Dollar from NGC and they finally attributed the mule variety with the 1934 Junk Boat design! Finally! I feel NGC is getting better with their Census.
