Question for the error guys and gals

coinbufcoinbuf Posts: 11,793 ✭✭✭✭✭

Would especially appreciate any input from @FredWeinberg Is this a clash or a vise job, note the orientation of the letters of the motto on the rev, I can see no way this would happen except for a clash. But I'm open to suggestions otherwise.

The motto is backwards. Isn’t that a sign of being a vise job?

If the letters are incuse (dip below the surface field) I would say vise/ sandwich. If they are raised above the surface it would be clash.

Vise job, because the D is incuse on the C of ONE CENT, and similar I on N and W on E.

On a legit clash, you do not see effects within the letters. You see them on the fields.
The letters are incuse on the dies, so they do not reach the insides of the letters on the other sides.
Only the edges of the letters at the field level impact the other die.

On a legit clash, the text from the other die is backwards and incuse, so that does not identify fakes.

Yup, looks like a vise coin.

You flipped the image, correct your orientation and compare to the motto as you see in this overlay from MadDieClashes.com. Or alternatively you could flip this clash overlay to match how you rotated the photo I posted. ;) Either way you will see that the letters are the same on the photo and the overlay.

@Aspie_Rocco @yosclimber @Old_Collector , this explanation from errorref.com may help. Pay particular attention to the second paragraph.

It's a vise job. Clash marks appear in the fields not over the devices. The devices are incuse on the die. It would take a massive clash to impart the image in the recesses of the die.

I think you misunderstood @yosclimber. His point was not about raised or incuse on the coin but the die. The "D" in "God" should not be over the top of the "C" in "cent" except in a vise job.

You might also note the rotation. Your clash overlay shows the "we" over the "C" in"cent". Your coin has "God"

Correct, be it vise or clash the die or host coin was slightly rotated where the overlay was not produced that way. Notice that there are no signs of a clash or vice above the memorial only below. What if the die was tilted (and rotated), that would explain why there are no signs of the clash above the memorial. Could a tilted die produce a clash so deep that it reaches the bottom of the devices or letters of one cent? I don't know hence the question.

Yes, I flipped it to show it was reversed in your photo. I should have just changed the orientation, though the point is not important now that @yosclimber brought to my attention that it would also be reversed with a clash.
