What’s the most interesting coin you bought at a garage sale?

I ran into a collector this past weekend and he mentioned he bought a high grade CC Morgan at a local yard sale. So it got me wondering what other people have picked up. For bragging rights show your best find and let’s see who got the best pick up!

I've only bought coins at a garage sale once before. A few years back when I was just starting in the hobby, I was like 13 or so. I was at a yard sale where an older couple lived. I asked if they had any coins for sale and the guy excitedly went into his house and brought out a few older blue Whitman folders for later date wheat cents, buffalo nickels, and early Jefferson nickels. He said that this was he had pulled from pocket change, and how he got started collecting. We estimated the face value of the lot and sold it to me for that. Obviously, nothing spectacular. He had pulled out most of the early and key date buffs, but there was a silver war nickel that he specifically pointed out to me. I didn't mind as I was just so excited to have so many buffalo nickels to play with and examine.

I've since gave those books to one of my dad's coworker's son that has also shown interest in the hobby.

Were you able to examine the CC Morgan dollar? Since the Chinese have been flooding the US coin market with counterfeit Morgan dollars for several years now, have I seen these fakes at flea markets.

1927s Standing Liberty Quarter for $1 about 20 years ago. It had a scratch on it so it wouldn't grade, but a great hole filler.

I bought contents of a desk drawer for two ivory folding rulers and some brass that I saw on top. I found a lot of neat stuff including AU 1909, 1909 VDB, and 1911 S cents. The cost was negligible, even for then. The brass was a surveyor compass.

Went to a garage sale locally when I was in my 20’s, and an older guy was selling items on behalf of his deceased brother. I noticed 4 Large Cents sitting on the table in front of him and asked if I could see them. Bought them for $25.00 each after a lengthy discussion with him explaining how much more money these were worth. He wouldn’t hear of it even after I told him to take them to a coin shop to see what they would give him for them. He was so adamant about only wanting $100. , so that was that. I had them in my possession for 30 years and traded them when I lost interest in that series. Kinda wish I still had them today.

It must have been over 15 years ago, this guy in the neighborhood held a garage sale that wowed everyone, drawing even antique shop owners with a lot of neat pre-WWII stuff. He allowed me to come back and look at his meager coin collection of which I bought a bunch, nothing special. One thing I will say is I do regret passing on his Mexican gold coins. However, this 1828 Half Cent with 12 stars was the most interesting specimen of my purchase.
