GTG on this 1898-S $20 Lib - Counterfeit - Story Posted!

Will post the answer later today.
Edit:
Submitted for a friend. The surfaces looked funny to me, but I thought it might come back "Genuine with altered surfaces" or something like that.
Came back from PCGS as COUNTERFEIT.

3 with a weird color
The image quality is not good. I'll guess MS63 if it straight-graded.
MS62.

A lot of modern made counterfeit US classic gold coins have the full weight and fineness of gold. He might be okay if he bought it at melt. Did he have it checked for actual gold content?

Wow... did not see that coming! ...and maybe an answer to a question posed on a different thread: Why do people send coins in to be graded?...
Successful BST transactions with: SilverEagles92; Ahrensdad; Smitty; GregHansen; Lablade; Mercury10c; copperflopper; whatsup; KISHU1; scrapman1077, crispy, canadanz, smallchange, robkool, Mission16, ranshdow, ibzman350, Fallguy, Collectorcoins, SurfinxHI, jwitten, Walkerguy21D, dsessom.
It would have fooled me. Let's hope it at least has high gold content.
I'll be meeting with him later and find out what he can remember. From what I can tell, it's been in a SDB for a long time so the cost basis is likely very low. It may have been his father's.
Talked with the owner today.
He bought it from Gene Henry about 50 years ago for $98! He keeps records and is in his early 80's.
Gene used to have a shop out in Issaquah, where Bellevue Rare Coins is today.
Several years ago I visited Gene in the shop. He had a box full of counterfeit coins that he had accumulated over the years, many gold, saying they were going to the ANA, after he passed, for educational purposes.
I can only assume this one fooled him.
It would be nice if PCGS included a note explaining their reasoning - give us some info for $70!

Looks off; other dates seem to be more likely to be counterfeits like a 1903 I had.
Curious if this one came out of the Middle East back in the 1960’s, when a bunch of the 2.50 and 5.00 counterfeit denominations were made.
I thought it would come back altered surfaces - we will have it tested and hopefully there's some bullion value!
It looks off to me especially the Mintmark, Hell still come out way ahead, there's probably a substantial amount of gold melt in that coin .
The mint mark looks like a wide S from later than 1898. Had I not seen that it was counterfeit, I'd probably have asked for a close-up picture of it.

Looks like it is brass?
the reverse side is what gives it away
I would think so, based on that color. Hope that I am wrong though!
