WOW! The entire die was split and the coin was struck in oval shape. Check out the W in WE, and the misaligned rim by Lincoln's shoulder. I don't recall ever seeing a die split of this magnitude before.

There was an article in Coin World 1973 that showed the progression of this split die. Quite fascinating as it featured about 1/2 dozen cents in various stages. I believe the last coin showed the 50% cud.

Would love to have seen that.

Found this in a google on Coin World for 1972 D split die.

Also this 1972 D obverse which very well maybe the earlier stage of progression of the die break.

What's a reasonable asking or buying price for one of these?

Likely between $10 and $500. Possibly less, or more. Pictures would help narrow it down...

Very funny. You're a pistol. Like I said: What's a reasonable asking or buying price for one of these? Here's a picture to narrow it down for you. 😂 🤣

There was a bad batch of die steel that came through in 1972-73 that caused many split dies like this on cents and nickels.

I remember a Coin World article in '72 or '73 showcasing the progression of some of those dies with a photo array of struck cents and nickels.

    .

It was not necessarily "bad steel".
I had two dies split down the middle (before I even used them). That was not due to bad steel.
It happened because I cooled them down incorrectly from the heat-treating (hardening) process.
