The D mint mark was made using the same D punch on the 1916-D dime and 1914-D cent. Just look at the mint mark on the first two genuine photos of the 1914-D cent and 1916-D dime followed by your non-genuine example and the difference in the mint mark is quite clear.

Heck, it’s a federal crime, get a mug shot if you’re in the police “office”.

Definitely a fake coin. Chinese - there are plenty of them on ebay all the time.

Someone trying to sell you a '16-D "fir quite a bit cheaper then what it looks like there selling for" is a definite red flag.

This is certainly a counterfeit 1916-D Mercury dime as those before me have stated that. The D mint mark is not the correct known style and or the correct position on the coin. That D mint mark should have been your first clue that this was a fake. Steer clear of that coin and especially the seller. Buy a graded coin from a reputable dealer. If the deals too good to be true, then it’s no deal.

It doesn’t look like an altered D - it looks like a counterfeit coin.
