Would PCGS slab with Details a 1909-VDB Lincoln if the “S” was added and not real?

islemanguislemangu Posts: 1,465 ✭✭✭✭

We have encountered two coins raw from different collections recently in which the “S” seemed added by unscrupulous profiteers . It would be cool to have one in a PCGS details slab just for educational purposes. Anyone ever seen one slabbed or know PCGS would do this on a tampered with 1909 VDB cent? I’ll add a close up pic later if any interest.

No they should not and I believe that they will not slab counterfeits.

I hope not. Such coins should be returned without being slabbed, noted as “Added S” or “Added mintmark”.

ICG slabs counterfeits. A member of our club has one with a NOT GENUINE yellow label stating "added S".

I have no problem with any major grading service slabbing counterfeit coins with the notation on the label that the coin is a counterfeit and the type of counterfeit such as cast counterfeit, tooled date, added mintmark, etc. These coins would be useful for educational purposes to show collectors what to look for.

According to the PCGS grading standards for ""no grades", they will not encapsulate a coin with an added mintmark.

    Ditto at CAC and NGC.

the label may not have enough words to describe the counterfeit

but no, even as education, i'm no fan of a top tpg holdering them. perhaps in a 100 years they'll be contemporary counterfeits and special holders could be made. oversized, red, counterfeit in the plastic and on the oversized label. just pondering
