Have you cherry picked unlabeled die varieties in ANACS slabs?

Anonymous poll. Have you cherry picked an unlabeled die variety in a modern era ANACS holder? Can include RPM, RPD, DDO, DDR, or any FS-# eligible variety.

I realized today that I do not typically search ANACS holders coins for varieties, because it usually is on the label if possible. I only picked one (minor 43-P 5C ddo15) DDO ever in an unlabeled holder, compared to dozens at any other certification company.

I have read and heard they will attribute coins when they catch something in grading, even if not requested. I admire that a lot.
Is it true that they will attribute automatically? Anacs is the only company I consider better than any other services for variety attribution. I have never seen an incorrect attribution from them, which is another point of admiration.

It got me wondering if I am overlooking cherries, or if I have saved time not really looking.

Thoughts?

If the coins aren't sent in for varieties, there won't be one on the label. I imagine there is plenty of opportunity regardless of the grading service.

Guess what this is?

I own or have photos of this Redbook variety misidentified by all four TPG services approved by eBay. PCGS pumps them out often, even when you tell them about the variety on their submission sheets.

Yes, it's an 1855/54. Your circled areas are the "damage" part of "DAMAGED-CLEANED." It's raised metal from two slicing hits.

Even though it's been double detailed by ANACS, I find it somewhat attractive with its shimmering fake luster from cleaning, even though I normally don't care for cleaned, hairlined coins.

I can't say if this has always been ANACS' policy since the beginning, but like the other grading services, we typically won't attribute varieties if attribution service is not requested, unless it's a variety listed in the Red Book.

Sometimes, if it isn't a Red Book variety but is significant and obvious, we will either call the customer and ask if they want to add attribution or we will note the variety on the packing slip with a suggestion to have it attributed.

One that comes to mind is a guy who brought a body-bagged circulated Morgan to my table. It had been returned because it was a contemporary counterfeit, but he didn't understand the grader comment on the packing slip. John Roberts (our silver dollar specialist) had noted on the packing slip that he should consider sending it to Leroy Van Allen for attribution. I helped get him in touch with Leroy, and he now has a VAM discovery to his credit.

Some of our reps (like me) do provide opinions on coins to potential customers when they come to our table at a show and ask for one, as a pre-screening for submitting. Being a variety person, I sometimes notice good CPG varieties the owner doesn't know they have and will advise them to consider attribution. It's an enjoyable part of the job.

One ANACs one ICG.
The ICG I cracked and sent to NGC came back 68 Cam the ANACS came back 68.

I usually score undergraded coins in new ANACS holders. I don't look for minor varieties but I am sure there are plenty out there.

It's totally understandable that TPGs don't notice varieties unless asked to look. What would really be nice though is if the variety can be seen clearly in the photo cert, we could pay a few dollars more to have the variety listed on the cert page without having to send the coin back to the TPG to get a new label and reholder.

The thread title doesn't make sense. There are most certainly unlabeled die varieties in slabs other than ANACS slabs so why limit yourself to just searching for die varieties in only ANACS slabs?

I'm wondering if the OP's assumption was that ANACS caught all varieties and it wasn't worth the effort to search for unattributed ones.

I assumed ANACS catches most varieties. I typically cherry pick pcgs only. I think Perry might have missed the first post in the thread where I explained...
