Would you deal with this dealer again?

Would you give this dealer another chance?
I ordered an item direct on the dealer's website after making an account through said website, last Wednesday. I received an order confirmation email that day and my website account showed the item as "ready to ship". The rest of the week no other information was provided. On Monday I called to inquire about the item, the person who answered the phone said he would look into it and call me back. By Tuesday morning (yesterday), no call, so I call the dealer again. Another person answered the phone and after explaining the issue they found that the item had shipped the day before and that I should have received an email. I did not receive an email, but after requesting the tracking number over the phone it appears to indeed have been shipped. My website account still shows "ready to ship" so it's clear this was not updated either. This was my first transaction with this particular dealer. They have a B&M shop in a major metropolis and are very well known in the coin business. I really resent having to chase down my order and I'm hesitant now going forward dealing with them again, but maybe I'm being too harsh and this was a fluke? Would you deal with them again?

Do business with those businesses that perform to your expectations. That said, businesses have off days. Me, I'm happy to work thru a clunky transaction for the right coin, it happens. And often times for the right coin I come back again and again for yet another clunky transaction.

Take the route that works for you.

See the coin first... I see these situations as being about the coin as circumstances you described seem to be part of life. If the coin fails to meet expectations... that would be the tipping point for me. Hopefully this will have a happy ending for you.

Same as above. After dealing on ebay for 20 years, I have found my patience to be a true virtue. Didn't have it at one time. I have many good seller/buyer relationships that started out rocky. Give it the considerable time needed to fulfill seller's promise and if all be good, then overlook it this first time.

Once you are uncomfortable with a coin dealer (or a doctor, lawyer, etc.) you are predisposed to have problems on return visits.

Coin collectors are an impatient group. Wait until the item arrives and then decide.

The shipping delay issue could be related to the carrier. Even when I buy on Target, Lowes, etc, I get message item shipped when all that means is the seller prepared the shipping label and awaiting for the carrier to pickup the item. That could be 7:00 pm the following day and there is no real movement in transit. I'd wait for coin to judge the dealer. Doesn't seem overly long period and yes would have been nice to call you back on Monday but who knows what the day brought.

I didn’t detect impatience on the part of @goodmoney4badmoney as much as I did lack of confidence in the dealer. And based on the details provided, I’d feel the same way.

I had a similar situation last year. Put a coin I wanted in my cart at collectors corner then waited to hear back from that seller for payment details. After several days of nothing I called the seller, guy that answered said hold on then asked the dealer if he still wanted to sell it. Dealer said yes so I gave my CC info and expected to get an email with the tracking. Several days later still nothing so I called again and got the tracking, coin arrived a few days later.

Everything worked out and I was not worried, but the communication could have gone smoother. So my answer to your question is yes I would buy from that dealer again, but he might not be my first choice "go to" guy from how that interaction went.

I understand the frustrations but one transaction shouldn't define someone, especially since the transaction hasn't ended yet... If they make a habit of it, then that's your answer...

    Totally agree with @U1chicago .
In my experience many coin dealers are not necessarily big on business processes or customer communication, but that doesn’t mean they’re not well meaning, and it doesn’t mean that they can’t be great and trusted sources to help build your rare coin collection. I’d certainly give them another shot, unless there’s a good reason not to…

Funny this thread came up today.
Every week I search through my list of dealer websites to look for coins. I have found that a lot of these websites are similar in there framework. It almost seems that someone or company has designed many of them.
The one's I was looking at last night are very well known dealers, and they all had issues in there search capabilities, the same issues.
I reached out to one of the dealers and told him of the problems and he said that he would have his IC department look into it, that was a week ago. Well, nothing was fixed and I still had issues searching their website.
I'm not sure if these are a result of web designers using AI to design these websites or not but it sure does look like they all have the same problems.
If I can't go to a dealers website and be able to perform a simple search for coins it's not worth my trouble and time.
So maybe the dealer that you dealt with is also having issues with their website and need to be informed about it.
    Rant over.

I contacted a well-known dealer a year or two ago looking for a particular Carson City Morgan in XF45. An excerpt from their response:

"Handling certified, circulated Morgan Dollars except for the Key Dates is not really our 'message' and we would prefer not to continue to post items that might confuse our return customers."

I thought that was pretty pompous, but I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'd probably still buy a coin from them today if they had one I needed. LOL!

I have a pretty high tolerance for insult and pain in business which seems to go with the territory.

I don’t think it was pompous. But rather, a direct response from someone who knows what type of coins work best for his business model.

Website development can be pretty challenging, especially if you do it from scratch. I can't speak for AI since I don't use it nor will I ever use it. I know for my own website it took me an absurd amount of time to get the album customization and order form system functional. The most difficult part was getting emails to send from the website and at one point the website was flagged as potential spam.

For what it’s worth, I have received two emails in the last week or so from a well know dealer in a large metropolis stating that they’ve had significant website issues and are working on fixing them. No idea if it’s the same dealer, but perhaps there’s a plausible reason. Or the dealer’s no good at handling business at best.

I might make a mental note if a dealer is annoying to work with, but if they have something I want, I’ll likely still get it. I’ve only fired a few dealers, and that’s because they were intentionally deceitful, and dishonesty like that is inexcusable.

    Got this from Northeast today:

Several days ago we sent an email discussing a website issue that we were, and still are, experiencing. While the issue still has not been resolved, we are happy to report that we've made significant progress.

You may start noticing that you're getting emails such as order confirmations from us that are delayed by 24 hours or more. These are the automated emails that our website sends. The fact that you're getting these at all indicates the progress we've made. Hopefully, all emails that our site automatically generates will start going out, and going out on time.

Until the issue is fully resolved, we will continue to manually send you order confirmations and such. We apologize that you'll be receiving emails in duplicate. We very much appreciate your patience as we continue to work on the matter!

So it seems a lot of trouble out there

  • goodmoney4badmoneygoodmoney4badmoney Posts: 1,298 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don’t want to name them, but it is not Northeast. The shop is open 6 days a week, so my call was 4 days after the order. I asked if they/item was delayed because of a coin show or something, was told “no, it is here in the display case”.

Well said, Jim. I wasn't always as patient as I have grown to be now. Advancing age (maybe even advancing wisdom) has granted me more patience, and it pays off in terms of lower stress and improved relationships. Giving people a little grace feels good in fact. Who'da thunk it? :-)

Sounds like the OP's dealer is a B&M store that tried to expand into the online world. They may still be heavily rooted in the conventional part of the business.
