Just thought I'd share.
Would love to hear what our Trade Dollar folks think about this one...
OP says they inherited it reddit.com/r/coins/comments/1kprzom/trade_dollar/

I'm not a proof guy but overall that seems like an attractive and natural example. Except for whatever is going on between the arrows... I don't know what happened there but it's funky.

Impressive. Looks at least gem if not superb gem.

Looks quite attractive but as you know, it could be noticeably hairlined, yet not show that in the images.

Was it just sitting in a blue Whitman folder? Looks like it has some nice color.

Every once in a while I see a similar looking blobby/splotchy area on an otherwise-great looking coin. My guess is that it’s some type of environmental issue and reaction, but precisely what, I don’t know.

Since I can’t view the coin in hand, in this case, I’ll throw out one other far less likely possibility - could it be a planchet flaw?

A planchet issue was my initial gut reaction but I don't think I've ever even heard of something that size on a proof.

I think I might have seen a very small number of planchet flaws of that size on Proofs. If only the image would allow us to tilt and rotate the coin, we might know he answer.😉

That is a beautiful proof Trade $1.

Similar toning as this superb PR66 1873 T$1 beauty on CoinFacts.

Agreed. Given the photos we have, I have no reason to believe it is significantly hairlined though.

I saw that yesterday. It looks at least a 65.

Wow. First picture is a bit surreal with in embedded in a blue Whitman. Probably pretty nice in hand. Can't rule out hairlines from pics, of course.

The coin is at an angle in the picture so who knows what the surfaces really look like.
