Just curious if your LCS will let you pick the junk silver you want .

Most all the shops locally will no longer allow picking my own 90% junk siver.is this a new trend ? I don't care for it ,I try to be quick and efficient . I went along it and found one half with a hole and 4 supposed Franklin's of the 20 I bought were Kennedy halves. No returns . I can totally understand if the shop is busy but I go when I'm the only person.is this typical around the country now? Thanks

Where I am, that's not typical. I can spend all day long looking for what I want with no issues.
I haven't looked through a junk silver bin in quite some time but the LCS in Flagstaff AZ would let me set up residence at the end of the counter and I could peruse all I wanted. I haven't seen a junk silver bin in any of the LCS in Baltimore... mostly roller cases and coins in 2x2 flips.

how big is the coin store, how much room do you take, how long do you spend, how much do you buy at once?
I would think that with most shops, it’s more about relationships and trust than about policies.

It has been many years since I rummaged thru the junk silver bins at a LCS. That said, back when I did, it was really dependent on the shop. The shops I did some sort of regular business with were open to it, the shops I did not have much of a relationship with tended to be less receptive.
I didn't think of this. I believe when I first went to the shop I currently go to, the lady sat pretty close to me, but since I've been going a while now, they leave me to it.
Well they kniw me by name. I've bought alot over the years. I usually get 1 or 2 rolls of halves and whatever mercuries they have. I am fast I dont wate time.
One shop said they don't have time to deal with anyone that wants to look fir them selves. My son goes to a shop in NC where it's all on the counter and you just pull up a bar stool. They say nothing even when he is there an hour. I take 5. Minutes or less.
maybe you're leaving them with too much junk junk
Mine allows it. They hand me the entire bin, and allow me to sit at a desk and go through it. I take my time, and usually pick up 2 or 3 rolls of halves each month. I’ve even found a few G-VG Seated halves in the bin!

What's been said by several holds true... I built up a relationship with the LCS over 5 years of going there, spending a bit of money, and learning a lot about coins along the way.

You find g-vg seated halves in the 90% bin?! I've found good Barber and occasionally better date Walkers. The customer getting to nit pick 90% is about trust. One should always conduct oneself as deserving of the shop's trust when handling their 90%. All it would take is one bum with sticky fingers to ruin it for others.

"Well they knew me by name."
Yeah, but what name were they calling you?

When I used to go to my LCS years ago, I was actually encouraged by the owner to pull up a seat at the counter and look through all the bins of “junk silver”. There were also bins of all other denominations to look through. The problem was that the owner left in all the better coins too. She hooked me in and I was caught. Every time I went in, I was expecting to find something good and was rarely disappointed. In silver junk, I was pulling out choice unc. late date Washington’s, and Franklins and gem, first year Kennedys at scrap silver prices. Then she sold her business and the shop would no longer let me do this. Nice while it lasted, but then I was done. So my point is, they used to let you do this, until they didn’t.
I have not bought junk silver since before the 1979-80 boom and bust and $50 an ounce silver. Back then I could look through their bin or boxes. The local coin shop here in Erie, Colorado does have bins by denomination, dimes through dollars, but I have no idea whether I can rummage through them. I bought a graded 1937-S Quarter (MS64) and 1942(P) Half-Dollar (PR-65) there last Saturday.
Time and space when compared to how busy the shop is may be the key considerate for the owner. My small coin shop in Beckley, WV has people tying up the counter looking, but Joe allows it. I can understand a much larger/busier shop having issues.

I used to pick through junk silver bins about 4 years ago. I was a younger numismatist at the time, so they likely wanted to help out the kids of the upcoming generation. I've had a handful of good picks before, especially condition rarities and varieties.
My local coin shops always had a fast turnaround for junk silver. I'd imagine a shop with slow turnaround would want good inventory therefore would be less inclined to let you pick through material. Nevertheless, a sale is a sale so I think all shops should offer the option to cherrypick junk silver!
