Update: CAC Sticker Submission for Washington Quarters

Matt04Matt04 Posts: 208 ✭✭✭

I just picked up my Washington Quarters I submitted to CAC for stickering. Thanks again to @BAJJERFAN for allowing me to submit on behalf of his account and making the process extremely smooth.

Here are the two that stickered. There were only three in particular I questioned why didn't sticker. Since submitting these, I've done further research to understand why and to attempt to learn for future reference.

John was busy on the phone but he was kind enough in the back to review the coins again and provide an explanation for the ones I didn't understand why didn't sticker.

Firstly being the 44-D MS67+ - This one I was told was extremely close to stickering, its noted "Nose" on the sticker.

Second one, from my understanding they usually leave PVC stickers on coins flagged for pvc. This one did not have a pvc sticker until it was sent in again for John to review. PCGS didn't flag it for PVC? Interesting

Are you sure the sticker on the 44 is not saying close and pointing to the thin scratch in the hair?

The lady at the front desk that gave them to john said it was the nose

I too read it as close and where the sticker is situated underscores that conclusion.

In my experience, PCGS overlooks minor PVC more often than CAC does.

Gotcha, the thing though is it didn't have a PVC sticker initially until it was reviewed a second time. Is this usually the case? I've seen dozens of videos of unboxings after cac submissions that the coins have PVC stickers on them.

Perhaps JA was in a rush the first time through, and when pressed for the reason identified the PVC. Or maybe the issue is relatively minor. I don’t think there’s anything significant to infer just because it wasn’t stickered PVC initially.

I think she just misread the note, I see nothing at all going on with the nose, but I could see the thin scratch and/or couple of dings that pocketchange pointed out being the reason for no sticker at the 67 level.

The sticker says "Close", not "Nose".

I am guessing that the pair of divots in Washington's hair were too much to overcome on an otherwise untoned, white coin that looks like it has acceptable, but not blazing, luster for CAC to give a sticker at the MS67 grade.

My experience with CAC is that they are far less tolerant of what they interpret to be PVC on a coin's surface than what PCGS or NGC might be for the same material. Could it be that CAC is being just a little too sensitive about surface issues and that they might be flagging coins for PVC that don't actually have PVC? I guess. It also might be that PCGS and NGC simply are more tolerant of what they consider to be minor amounts of PVC on the surface of a coin.

I don't know that I would infer that the lack of an initial sticker on the PVC coin meant that JA or CAC were too busy and/or careless. Rather, I don't know that CAC advertises that they will do this for collectors and it might be that sometimes they go out of their way to put a sticker like this on a coin and sometimes they don't. In other words, it might be that the sticker is an additional courtesy to the collector that is sometimes not applied.

I think sometimes it is damage that resulted from PVC, even if all of the PVC is gone. I had a 27-D Peace Dollar graded PCGS 64 that CAC said had PVC. I cracked it out, did a very long acetone soak, submitted raw and got 64 again. CAC said it still had PVC, which I concluded was surface “etching” from the PVC which cannot be removed.

The obverse of this MS66 coin is one of the best examples of PVC I've seen posted on this board.

It's so frustrating not to know why your coins didn't sticker and as TomB said, JA went out of his way for you putting stickers on your coins..

I probably should've taken advice from @TomB and cleaned it prior to submission. I figured I didn't want to touch it and keep it in its original state. I thought it was some sort of streak toning of sorts.

As Connecticoin described, it is easier said than done. You are best to move on.

Yea if you get feedback stickers, you're one of the lucky ones. He doesn't do that frequently at all, he might have sensed that you were newer to the hobby and wanted to help as best as he could.

I think you missed the part where OP said he called CAC after seeing many of the coins didn’t pass, and JA went through the coins a second time and applied stickers.

Of course, that only supports the preponderance of existing evidence that JA is a stand up guy.

I didn't receive feedback stickers initially. When I went to pick them up I asked so I could better understand what he saw that I missed so I could learn from it. (I just saw @PocketChange response) *
