Just Made a POP 1 PL Trade Dollar

Here she is:

1876 MS63PL, this coin finally crossed with the PL designation on the fourth try(never give up).

Bought this coin years ago in a NGC64PL holder and knew it should cross. It is now top pop at PCGS with the other PL being a MS62PL.

In hand this coin is simply spectacular a tad dark but the bright toning and flashy mirrors make up for it. I even showed this coin to J.D. and off the bat he thought it was a proof, then proved through a couple of diagnostics that it is indeed a business strike coin. This coin most definitely was sold as a proof before it made its way into its holder. Such a lovely coin I don’t think I will ever sell this.

Nice! Did you crack and resubmit each attempt raw, use Regrade or Reconsideration, or was it attempted in the NGC holder each time?

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Just submitted for crossover each time. Did not want to risk fully losing the PL designation.

It's very difficult to get PCGS to actually acknowledge trade dollars as PL, even when they clearly are. There are something like five for the entire series in PL PCGS plastic?

Congratulations, great coin well deserved crossover!

If you haven't yet, you should absolutely buy the new T$ book by @keoj https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1113321/new-trade-dollar-book-available

JD will have his Proof T$ reference out (I think) later this year.

Nice coin!!!!! I have a couple of PCGS designated PL Trade Dollars and a couple that have not made the PL grade yet. As noted, PCGS is extremely tough on PL's (in some cases undeservedly so). Great persistence!! As Crypto mentioned, send me a PM and I would love to see a close up of the dies. I'd love to match the diagnostics and correlate with the TD book. Best, Keoj

I will be sure to send you some photos and videos in between its return and its trip to CAC, PM me your email. It should be coming back to me soon( I was super excited I haven't even seen the coin yet but, had to post it). I would also love to see your PL dollars if you have the chance.

  • Do you mind showing a photo of the coin in its holder?

rims aren't perfect but I would guess proof 95%. The 1876s are ghosts of Proof production. It could be an early BS of one of the many proof dies that were pressed into service. Knowing the reed count and die pair would clear some of it up. its a great coin either way

Congrats on finally getting it crossed. Great coin with great toning.

  • Super sweet EDL. Ive been looking for one myself without much luck. To find such a beauty without a chop is spectacular. I'm happy for you. Thats a coin to keep.

I wont even ask what it costs you cause you were just plain lucky to find it period. I keep going back just to look at it.

Beautiful piece, and yes it absolutely does look like a proof at first glance.

What markers in particular were identified that makes this one a MS coin?

I would also love to know the answer to this question. I’m just starting to learn more about Trade dollars, so I wouldn’t even know where to start.

The true view looks better than some of the more recent shots we have seen.

@PocketChange you have a point. I assumed it was because of the layout and it looks just like one.

I'm tracking a perfect match for die pair 2, which is a Proof.

Die pair ten does not show the chip on the 6 nor the reverse chip on the E.

I don't see a matching chip on the E nor the 6 on the OP coin. Hard to miss the massive chip on the thigh though which is only found on 10. The photos are not the most clear for die matching, so we may need to table this until the OP jumps in.

Possibly, two of the times it came back AT(possible but it is 100% PL) and only once cleaned( I do not agree)

Matching dies isn't going to prove much because some of the dies were used to make proofs, and then later used to make coins for circulation. The trick is to look at the attributes like rims, mirrors, strike and frost/cameo, but like I said before, even those can be confusing.
