1902 O Morgan Dollar mintmark oddity

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,609 ✭✭✭✭✭

Most likely a damage issue to the mintmark, but I don't see it for certain. This 1902 O appears to be a D, but shouldn't be. Possible counterfeit?

Do not have coin. It's on ebay just noted the mm. Contacted seller who says it is an odd looking mm, but real.

I thought the same and from these terrible photos couldn't truly see an impact, only the result of one. I was just perusing ebay seeing how to quickly ID a micro "o" and ran across this and thought it interesting. Very few others did. Lol

Maybe it’s a hit or strange lighting. But it looks very wrong to me. Personally I’d steer clear.

    Date looks odd also

  • jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,609 ✭✭✭✭✭

I did an overlay of the date and it appears a match. Can't add it on my phone, but will when I get home later this evening. If anyone feels it to be a counterfeit, be a little more specific, so we can better evaluate the photos to a more helpful reply to op.

It appears the seller updated the listing with 2 new images of the mm.

The OP images make the mintmark look fake. the pic @Olympus620 posted the mintmark looks genuine.

Edit to add a normal O not a micro O.

Kind of odd, as seller told me on the 4th that it looks like a D but is an O. Whatev.
