GAI Baseball Cello Pack

I am considering purchasing a GAI pack with a serial number starting "102". Is there a reasonable expectation that the pack is legitimate?

Word on the street is that GAI graded packs starting with 102 can potentially be bogus. There are some unopened experts on here who can chime in in more detail. If this is a "grocery cello" pack, I would run away.

I bought several years ago and they were all no good. Can’t say I remember the serial numbers but I bought 4 and they were all trash

It's the singer not the song - Peter Townshend (1972)

  • Thanks, I appreciate the information and the link.

I never take a chance on higher than 101xxx

Also I've had Plastic on 2 GAI "slabs" begin to crumble. One of which was top of the bubble where cello resides thus the integrity of that "slab" is no longer valid.

If only PSA did not attempt to cram packs into their slabs with lack of regard or care if damage results then they would be perfect....

GAI holdered a lot of grocery cello packs that are not legitimate. These had certs starting in 102. Most are from 1970 to 1972. Topps never issued grocery cellos, so any of these are not legit packs. If those are what you are looking to buy, stay away.

I bought two (2) packs 1962 (1st series - Managers Dream on back) and 1963 (3rd series - Mantle series) wax packs...and both crossed to PSA. So…it must be hit and miss on 102xxxxx packs.

You cannot simply go by the cert numbers when determining the reliability of GAI graded packs as there are bad packs with 100XXX and 101XXX certs and perfectly legit packs with 102XXX and 103XXX cert runs. It is more important to evaluate each packs individually based on its own merits and attributes. That said, all the so-called "grocery" cellos from 1970 through 1974 (a bad 1974 cello just sold on ebay the other day) bear a cert number beginning with 102XXX and are bogus.

I have heard from the pack experts on Facebook chat boards that it is a pretty safe bet that packs through 103 should be good, though there are never any guarantees. 104+ is like a box of chocolates . . .
