I have no idea what that is, doesn't look like a bad alloy mix.

Looks like something liquid spilled on the coin, leaving a residue and/or reacting with the metal.

I have two coins like that and I agree that it is an improper alloy mix but I am confused because I figured it would be a homogeneous mixture and not separated. Maybe @FredWeinberg can chime in?

Although I can’t open any of the photos in the original post, based on the photo above, it’s not an improper metal mixture or error point of any type in my opinion – some type of liquid, as others have said, or aLightly corrosive liquid of some type – I’ve seen this effect on other coins – they didn’t leave the mint looking like that

Soak in 100% Acetone - see what happens!

Looks like liquid of some sort to me. If it was an improper alloy mix... would likely see some the effect on the raised areas of the design that the effect surrounds. (and also the planchet - rim areas)

Thanks for your input. I soaked the wlh in acetone overnight, nothing changed. It's definitely in the metal. The obv seam at L I is particularly telling. I'm wondering if this isn't the prequel to delamination.

    wlh, definitely a chemical

acetone isn't a cure-all, or we'd dip toners in acetone
