I would be a little surprised if anyone here bought that coin with those pictures for the price that it went for, I think that it is overpriced. Looks probably cleaned and pretty poor fields to me, although the pictures are poor.

    Nobody here would touch that.

I did not buy this coin but I am pretty confident that someone here did.

Also, @Old_Collector and @fathom are wrong about the desirability and pricing of this coin. The coin clearly has problematic surfaces and is not exactly a looker. So it's probably like the 12th best example of approximately 15 known?

Once this coin is in an XF Details holder it would probably auction for $2000-2500. In the exact same condition but with chopmarks I would have paid much more than $1k.

76-S DDOs are simply NOT available in any condition. This is a once a half decade find. Good luck finding another.

PS - Go buy the trade dollar book published yesterday! -> https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1113321/new-trade-dollar-book-available

I see the foot doubling. Do you you see the scroll doubling in the photo or is that in hand only?

In the pictures the scroll almost looks like a type 1 alignment but that is due to the heavy doubling. It's much more apparent in hand.

You can also look for Liberty's outstretched arm and chin to be doubled. From Coinfacts:

All that was said was "no" on buying this coin and that was all that was said, fwiw and no more

( no disrespect to anyone or anything ) 🙂

I know who purchased the coin. Another Trade Dollar person. As Lermish stated, these are very, very hard to find. I stood down on this one but $1k price was a low IMO.

    $2k ?….a real show piece 🤮

  • keojkeoj Posts: 990 ✭✭✭

For this variety, there are almost no "show" pieces. For non-chopped coins, only 2 non problem coins exist (with one of these being on the edge). A single, excellent, chopmarked example exists. All others have issues.

I was the underbidder for it, old habits. That said I wanted it for my raw silver dollar box and it’s worth maybe 2k graded as wizzed. Wasn’t worth chasing to retail as wizzed is my line too far in terms of preservation. It takes most of the joy out of a coin for me.
