STOLEN COIN ALERT! 1928 Lincoln Cent PCGS MS67 RED
STOLEN COIN ALERT! For the first time EVER in the 35+ years I've been dealing in coins (yes, I know I'm very lucky), I had a package that I shipped by USPS Overnight Priority Express from Irvine to Northport, NY, get broken into and the coin stolen, and a sliced up empty package delivered to my customer! I'm frustrated, angry, and sad that we have to deal with such unscrupulous U.S. postal workers who are handling our mail. Of course the coin was insured, but it is such a hassle and very disconcerting to me and my customer to have to go through this. I already filed claims with the p.o., my insurance, and also reported it to Doug Davis. So now I'm posting it here and on FB and MyCollect in case anyone happens across this particular coin. It's a 1928 Lincoln cent in PCGS MS67 RD, Cert No. 50542207.

If it happens again maybe try using UPS or FeDex. That is if you can get insurance with these other companies. I would think it should not be a problem.

look up how to contact the postal inspectors and get them involved (i.e. don't wait on a regular po employee)

I mean should an easy case if that specific employee did this before. How many times can you get away with it...can't be many times. Losing your job for this is just so stupid!!!

USPS positions aren't viewed as they once were, in which it was a desirable, well paying govt position with solid union protection and benefits. These days, they'll hire anyone with a pulse, and organized crime evidently has a more enticing "collective bargaining" agreement than the postal workers union.

Many private insurance policies will insure both USPS and Fedex to my knowledge, provided that its one of the expedited services, but something tells me that my renewal coming in a few weeks may have some new exclusions....

It sucks that the coin is currently missing. You may want to also register it within one of your own private registry so that if anyone attempts to do so later you will be informed of this. Also, I would reach out to PCGS to let them know about this, as well.

USPS has issues, that is nothing new. They need to get back on track and vet their employees better? Better surveillance? @PeakRarities made a good point above. Any help to improve USPS is good help imo.

Any help to improve USPS is good help imo.Correct, those two things are the main issues that can be resolved without corporate restructuring. Vetting, Background Checks, and security/surveillance. Many of their facilities are older and dont have adequate cameras, metal detectors, and employees are allowed to come and go as they please with bags and winter coats. It doesn't take a genius to grasp why that is a terrible policy that begs to be abused.
It also doesn't't help that the offenders typically aren't prosecuted, at least not with any level of severity. These thieves could give a rats behind if they lose that job, they will have made more money via a year of theft than they would working there for a decade.

So sorry, PL. Before you discontinue a 35 year problem free customer/package success for another agency, take a look at the other options, are they not experiencing similar things? I have utilized usps for 20+ years without a coin stolen. I've had a couple lost coming to me, but never lost one I shipped. I have also had fedex and ups not show up for delivery and have them reshipped, so it happens both ways. I think it is just the times, many people no longer feel pride and courtesy, but only take advantage whenever possible.

Hope the coin somehow finds it's way back to you or the purchaser. The customer may need the coin as part of a set they are working on.

Did the customer sign for it and take possession of the package or refuse it? Did the postal carrier scan it as damaged? If the recipient accepted it as is then it wasn't ONLY postal workers that had possession of it. IF it was "opened" while in possession of the postal service, how do you know it was not simply damaged in the machinery. If the recipient accepted it as is you may have a problem collecting.

If you receive any package that is opened (whether intentionally or by accident), and it has value, refuse it, even if a signature isn't required. Have the carrier or clerk do it in front of you. If a package is damaged but you think the contents may be OK, make sure the carrier or clerk scan it as Damaged.

By the way, I recently had an envelope arrive at a customer slashed open in the machinery but the contents miraculously stayed intact. But they easily could have fallen out...

Always put a "To:" and "From:" note, sticker, or write on inner container holding merchandise in case it's accidentally torn open and the contents fall out.

I really feel bad for the people involved with these situations. I know the stress from a package taking more than four days just from examples like this.

All PCGS slabbed coins, or any slabbed coin for that matter, that I send through the mail are double-wrapped in aluminum foil. The foil will prevent hand-held readers using a phone app from disclosing a sealed package's contents to a thief. Block electronic intrusions into the package is what I try to do.

I hate to see this happen to you.
I track all my shipments and outgoing , especially incoming. Often it will say “delivered POB 9am” but it may take them all day finally get it in my box. Many times gone to counter find out what’s going on / have clerk go get it especially some coins had graded by our hosts.

Saw one last week on Reddit where they delivered a $3,000 bullion coin, adult-sig-required by forging a sig and throwing the package over the fence. A kind of "quality" of delivery.

If the package was haphazardly ripped open, it might be because it got caught in the sorting machinery and not due to a nefarious intent. However, if the contents spilled out, then who knows what might happen at that point.
This is why I use secure inner packaging with the address clearly marked on that inner packaging.
