Die cap is not from a failed spring.
The spring had to be functional to move a new planchet in.
Further investigation shows Peele incorporated a friction plate to allow fingers to open when a bent planchet jammed in the feeding tube. apparently stranded coins on the die would have been frequent.
My assumption that some type of spring broke has been superseded by new discoveries.
