Morgan ANACS UDM

I haven't posted anything for a while. I figured I would post a coin I really like.
This is one of two I own. I have an 1884-CC that looks like a proof. This one has a bit more toning. Alot of what looks like little contact marks is actually toning.

    12 inch or better mirrors. I like to say you can shave with an UDM. In my opinion they are special coins.

    Pardon my ignorance… Does ANACS UDM equate to Proof Like?

    It's two levels beyond PL.

    Generally it has been said there is reflectivity of the mirrors from the following distances:

    Semi-prooflike = 1"- 2"
    PL=2"- 4"
    DMPL = 4"- 8"
    UDM = above 8"

    ANACS soapbox UDM's are largely regarded to be the gold standard for DMPLs. Usually they are the best of the absolute best for mirror depth.

    I disagree. I’ve come across plenty labeled UDM that looked barely DMPL.

    I had an old anacs soap box holder Morgan in PL and it crossed over to PCGS as regular MS.

    I don't doubt that you have seen an UDM that you didn't think met your or ANACS standards. I know by now that anything is possible with all tpg's.
    I just want to say that I wouldn't want one that wasn't what I am paying for.
    Buy the coin and not the holder.

    Very nice. I have this one with a different but similar designation.
    In hand, it does have really deep mirrors that my photo's do not do justice.

    I don't think you can capture the mirrors of an UDM in a photo. I have never seen a PCGS or NGC DMPL with mirrors close to as deep as my UDM.

    They are exceptional. This one has some peripheral toning and some if the fields. I know if I took it out and dipped it that it would look much better.
    Problem is PCGS and NGC would grade it DMPL.
    I really like them and to me they take the place or a proof. I myself for my budget cannot justify the cost of a proof. Not to mention I can't afford one right now.

    UDMs were more frequently encountered in the 80s and 90s. Most seem to have been crossed into our sponsor's plastic as DMPL. I miss them, but ultimately it is down to the coin anyway.

    While I don't advocate cracking (I prefer the UDM holders), there is something close-the NGC star DMPL. I have seen a few and they appear to be stronger than the typical DMPL. However, they are rarely seen and there is no guarantee an Anacs UDM would get the star (even if it deserved it).

    I consider the soap box udm to be terrific to collect. I have no doubt that some have become DMPL.
    I can't justify cracking one out of a soapbox. I love those holders. I wish they would go back to them.
