Pricing a Morgan or Peace Dollar in AU58?

kruegerkrueger Posts: 901 ✭✭✭✭

You have a Morgan or Peace dollar in MS58. The pricing Guide/sheet gives you prices in AU50 and MS60.
How would you call the price on an AU58. I have seen on say its 10% back of the MS60 price.
another divide the price difference into thirds ie: AU50, AU55 ,AU58. MS60. From 60-50 divided by 3 then add to each grade step.
let me hear from you Dollar experts, how you price them from the sheet.

If it has good eye appeal, a 58 should be worth 62 or 63 money. A 60 is usually a bag marked dog whereas a 58 can look like a 65 or higher but with a bit of “rub”

I have a construct to parse an AU58 as an "A" look coin, "B' look coin, "C" look coin or a "D" Dreck look coin.
Eye appeal seems to be quite broad on slabbed TPG graded AU58s. For my everyman set I only keep by my eye "A', or "B"coins, unless a"C" coin is quite rare., never a scratchy "D"coin.
    pricing has been another matter.

As Mark noted above, no formula can ever derive a realistic AU58 price based on Au50 to low MS prices. Need to look at specific coin's sales history. Also no consistency on TPG's AU58 grading. The eye appeal of specific coin to trade is warranted.

MS58? The lowest MS grade is 60.

I would consult CDN CPG, beyond that besides applying my cost plus see where it’s in range between known parameters. More like an executed keep or pitch play. Everybody seems to have their own ideas on that I just execute mine.

Main goal - positive Gross Margin.

I'd go on Coinfacts which has up to date auction and other sale results; then link to the Heritage Auction results which often gives you the Greysheet spreads.

Don't overthink it. The consequences aren't that great unless you are way off. And if you are way too high it will probably be the same consequence as being a little too high-no sale. Just make sure that you don't give it away and you can't go too wrong.

Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.

There’s no need to try to come up with general pricing formulas of the type you mentioned.
There are AU58 price guide values provided by CDN, as well as the PCGS and NGC price guides. There are also a multitude of auction comps in many cases - even for rarer dates.

    As @MFeld correctly stated

Successful transactions with : MICHAELDIXON, Manorcourtman, Bochiman, bolivarshagnasty, AUandAG, onlyroosies, chumley, Weiss, jdimmick, BAJJERFAN, gene1978, TJM965, Smittys, GRANDAM, JTHawaii, mainejoe, softparade, derryb, Ricko

Bad transactions with : nobody to date
