Mickey Mantle 1958 Topps thoughts on its grade

I bought about raw 100 1958 topps baseball cards at an estate sale online in Canada. Looking to get the better ones graded. Attached is one of the cards - Mickey Mantle would this about a PSA 6. As I am thinking I send all the stars cards in and base cards maybe what could be psa 7 or higher. Trying to guage what I got. As there are other stars like Aaron, Mays, Banks, Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson etc.
I saw a nice SGC 7 sold on ebay for $3,925 vs a ugly graded PSA 7 for $2,501.
Best to still send to PSA for down the road resale. Or has SGC now gained ground in vale vs PSA.
Thank you for your comments

I’d go PSA and this looks like a 4 with today’s vintage grading. Nice card.

    Thanks,

    4.5. Centering + top corner = 4. But color and focus+ .5

As others have said technical grade 4 or 4.5 but due to the excellent registration it will present nicer than the grade

Sounds good I always look at my cards better then others. Appreciate the feedback
    Thank you

I feel that there's a better than average chance to receive a 5 for this card but, in my opinion, that would be the ceiling.. Nice card and good luck.

I'm guessing a 3, although I am a total realist when I send stuff in, I expect the worst and base my decisions on that, and anything above that is a plus. Anything else I would consider it a nice win.

The 3 grade is based on the centering, corners, and mostly the notching on the left side. Also the print defect above the bill of Mick's cap could-should be another deduction.

That being said, send them in at the lowest expected value at PSA and let them bump you up in fees if they grade better. If you choose SGC (my go to for vintage) you can grade up to $1500 per card for $15, and get them back in 20 business days or less. PSA could have your cards until 2026 and it'll cost you more too.

Here is a recently graded 6...

I hate to be the party pooper but I'm also going with a PSA 3, citing the same left border and PD mentioned above.

Is that part of another card on the bottom right of that recently graded 6? If it is then things seem looser, not tighter.

This is a good plan - you can grade up to $1500 per card for $15. Thanks for the advice

In my opinion, which admittedly is equal to nothing, the OP's card is:

    PSA 4 - 35% chance
    PSA 4.5 - 25% chance
    PSA 5 - 40% chance

Another small red line further up the border as well. Apparently the flaws didn't cause it be rejected, even though it also looks a bit wide from side-to-side. They really stuffed it into that holder.

    I’m guessing 5 so probably a 3
    But I do think 5

  • If I’m being honest then that card grades at 3. 3.5/4 and the grader is in a generous mood….

    My guess is a 3
They are very strict these days.

If it was Luke Farkbloom maybe a 5. But since its Mickey 3 or 4. I was thinking 4 but really do feel you get docked or get the opposite of the benefit of the doubt if that higher grade gets you a lot more value. Agree with everyone that the centering and the upper left corner are detractors. Lower left is a little round. It has a thing on the lower left side that I'm not sure has a name but see it a lot in older cards, an edge scuff or fraying, where it looks like something hit it from the side and lifts it up a little, as if someone got it with a fingernail. I've turned some in with those that otherwise look nice and think the ceiling is a 6 if it has that.

Stain on right shoulder? Yellow stuff?
    If so def 3

  • brad31brad31 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think a 3 combo of top left and bottom left corner wear, ding on the lefthand side, print defect next to Mick's hat - and glue or paper loss on Mick's left shoulder brings it to a 3. I hope it grades higher for you but that is what I would expect.

If selling send them to Gregg Morris to get 5 prices. Don’t bother grading, you will net more.

  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,132 ✭✭✭✭✭

    I predict 4. But then, with today's grading, it's anyone's guess.

  • DanS832DanS832 Posts: 108 ✭✭

How about 1 more card from the group I just bought give me your thoughts on a grade for this card. Then I will start working on a submission for psa and let you know how i did when I get the grades back. Whitey Ford #320 - 1958 Topps. PSA 6 is realistic? With the corner wear or gets bumped down to a psa 5. Thank you again for the comments

    Nice card .back a little o c on back. 6.5 or 7..

  • nam812nam812 Posts: 10,595 ✭✭✭✭✭

Nice, clean, well centered Ford. I'd need to see that lower left corner in hand, but if it isn't as weak as the image is making it look, then I'd say it should grade somewhere from 5 to 6. Very nice card.

  • That’s a much nicer card. My guess is a 6.

  • brad31brad31 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭✭✭

I say 6 with possibility up to 7 on Ford.

  • DanS832DanS832 Posts: 108 ✭✭

Thaks again, I think this gives me two cards to compare the rest to.

  • BBBrkrrBBBrkrr Posts: 1,432 ✭✭✭✭✭

    That one is cool.

    As a vintage I’d expect a 6 at best.

  • UlyssesExtravaganzaUlyssesExtravaganza Posts: 670 ✭✭✭✭✭

Incredible looking card to me. Feel like if that was a player I was interested in and saw that in a 6 or lower holder I'd trip all over myself to scoop it up. It may be that and then I'd say just keep it and appreciate your awesome card. But could see 6.5 or 7. Color to me is outstanding. White borders look great for a card that old. Centering very nice. Upper right corner and chip on the left might be what gets them to pull it down but if so think it would be a nicer example of the grade.

  • ElMagoStrikeZoneElMagoStrikeZone Posts: 734 ✭✭✭✭

Consider the advice shared by 80sOPC, particularly for cards like the Whitey Ford. The nice centering on that card will push the value upward and past what it might otherwise see encased in a holder. It's a perfect example of what's driving the inflated prices of raw vintage cards right now.

Ok that makes sense also. I would like to held on to the cards for some time yet. So yes thats a good option also

    I think 6

I’m surprised with some of the guesses here on the high side. The corners are more than touched up. There id a big blotch near Micks cap. The back centering isn’t great. There is possible discoloring on the right edge. I would say 3.5 and be very excited for a 4.

  • KendallCatKendallCat Posts: 3,016 ✭✭✭✭✭

Don’t think it is getting above a 4/4.5 with the corners….plus PSA is much tougher with grades these days. This is my old 58 Mantle which imo looked under graded.

  • DanS832DanS832 Posts: 108 ✭✭

Thats a great looking card and yes I cant see why its only a PSA 7 - makes no sense. How recently was it graded

PSA #, 5 at very best.

I think the Whitey estimates are being confused with the Mickey estimates. Think the consensus on Mickey was 3 or 4. Whitey a bit higher.

Anything else in that 100 card pile that looks nice? That was interesting.

The Ford looks like an easy 6. Nice looking card.

I think you did very well with purchasing that batch. Love the 58 Aaron and the 59 Mays. Could see anywhere between 5 and 7. On Brooks see a line around the lower left that could be a game changer if its a crease or wrinkle. At first glance it looks nice though. Hard to tell what is going on with Frank around the eyes but if there is some damage there maybe just not worth the grading fees. Have always liked the look of that card though. Most Mantle cards are worth grading and that one probably grades higher than the first one shared. The Teds looks to be in pretty nice shape as well.

Thanks for sharing. These are very cool.

You did well buying these. Great condition.

And maybe get a pair of pliers and a flathead screwdriver out if you dont like the grades you receive.

There is a reason SGC is getting overwhelmed with submissions.
