Peace dollar toners question

Morgan13Morgan13 Posts: 2,498 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know the 1921 Morgan is tough to find with a nice tone. Usually the are very blotchy.
I am curious to know about Peace dollar toners. If you have one or more could you post them please?

IIRC, the planchets for 1921 and Peace dollars were prepared in a similar way that affected the way they tone compared to Pre-1921 Morgans. I forget if it had to do with the annealing or the way the planchets were rinsed, but to answer your question, yes, Peace dollars are also tough to find with attractive, natural toning.

PCGS recently graded this one as “cleaned”. People told me that any Peace Dollar with toning is assumed to be either AT or cleaned and retoned. Supposedly their surfaces are different than Morgan’s because of how the planchets were prepared that makes them not tone as easy as Morgan’s.

And here’s a couple of brown toned straight graded Peace dollar that are more in line with what normal toned Peace dollars sometimes look like.

They usually don't tone as attractively as Morgans. This is the most "colorful" one I have.

I also found this one on the PCGS app.

    It's graded 65+
    @lermish that's a nice toner. Is it graded MS63+?
Probably the nicest ive seen. Not to knock anyone elses.
I am hoping to have a nice colorful one soon.

I have a few. The 1921 HR is probably the hardest 20th century type coin to find with any real color. It’s up there with the bicentennial silver issues and the 99 state quarters.

Regular issue Peace Dollars with nice toning honestly aren’t that hard to find. There are a few pretty ones but also quite a few I’ve seen that are AT.

I don’t have great pics so these are screenshots of some videos I took.

It’s true, peace dollars usually tone funky. This one has probably been dipped at some point before being stored in a Wyatt Raymond holder or something. No way to be sure, luster is still nice.

I have a few, but they really are tough to find.

This looks much better in hand. A very mellow - albeit "chromatically limited" - appealing toning IMO.

@Floridafacelifter Those are some beautiful 1922s!

I think this it a beauty. Very nice strike for a peace dollar.
Some of that spotting looks like pvc but not thick so I'm hoping acetone gets it all.
I tried using the q tip method and a good amount came off! I need to let it soak.
It's part of the toning on the reverse.
    1923S

After a couple of hours in Acetone a good amount came off. I don't care how long I have to soak it I will get it all off.

Here's a raw one I have. Sorry, not the best pics. Opinions appreciated as to whether PCGS would approve of the dusty purple color.

A few of the coins on this thread have an AT look to me. I'm happy to be wrong though. Here's a 1927-S that I used to own. It's a pop 9 coin with 3 finer. It's a tremendous luster bomb, with some better-than-average toning thrown in:

Another, owned by someone else now too:

Mine is definetly not AT. I had to remove it from this block. It was not easy.
