PCGS Regrading Question

Quick question I had regarding Regrade/Reconsideration. I couldn't see on PCGS site but if I sent in a slab with a Grade Ex. 65+ I understand the + means something is holding it back from upgrading to the next grade. I have read stories of people that have sent coins in and have had them upgraded to get top pop or whatever grade it upgraded to. Is this something that anyone has attempted and has had success at before? I know the chances are low but, if you have, have you done it with Regrade or Reconsideration?

The plus just means PCGS thought in those few seconds a grader tilted the coin under a light that it was high end for the assigned grade. Folks get upgrades all the time using the Reconsideration service and they also don’t get upgrades all the time, too.

If you're just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks, you'll only be successful very, very rarely. If you have a good eye, and pick exceptionally good coins for regrade, you'll be successful rarely, which is a whole lot more. ;)

I’ve only used Reconsideration, quite often, and have had “satisfactory” success. Virtually all of my upgrades have been getting a plus on a coin with a whole grade. I choose to use Reconsideration since I want to retain the same cert number, since every coin I submit has a CAC sticker. If a whole grade CAC stickered coin gets a plus upgrade, then CAC will automatically resticker it, and only charge their lower fee. Last week I sent two of these to CAC to get automatically restickered.

With that said, I truly believe Regrade would provide better results on undergraded coins. If you don’t care about retaining the same cert number, I suggest Regrade should be used for the coins you believe have the best shot. My sense is highly lustrous problem-free “Classic” coins have an edge. The great thing about Regrade is the PCGS policy of retaining the same submitted grade if there is no upgrade.

In my opinion, from a financial perspective, it does not pay to play this game with three figure coins.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thanks for this information Steve. I tried looking it up, but if a coin is lets say 65+ and already has a + grade is a upgrade to the next number grade of 66 possible? Has this ever been the case for you, although from what you said its mostly been just + upgrades. Thank you

It’s possible, but it has happened with me only twice. However, my sense is that scenario has a greater chance of occurring with Regrade instead of Reconsideration.
