What is the difference if a coin is marked as First Strike vs the same coin that is not? Also my new friend Marky passed on one of his books to me and there is nothing about the 2003 silver eagle. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Just wanted to know, grading wise, the difference between first strike and Not. Thanks
Truly, there is nothing different between a coin slabbed as First Strike and one that is not. The difference is that the coin was submitted according to the rules of PCGS and, at one time, those rules stated something like the coin had to be submitted within 30-days of its original sale date from the US Mint (or other mint). Those rules might have changed, but many folks (including me) believe all the First Strike stuff on the labels is junk.

First strike (TPG label) is early in the die life / wellstruck coin. It’s no joke, not a gimmick, and sellers may price it a tad more. Have Retailed a lot of them.
It's a money maker, if it pays the bills go for it. Just a thought 😉
“First Strike” is marketing— pure and simple.
And, based on the pop report, the marketing appears to be working.
Consider the 2024 $1 Silver Eagles (MS) graded by PCGS.
Operational Definitions:
~ "Base" - no designations (i.e., 934507);
~ Designation w/o t Reference - includes a designation, but it is not based on submission timing.
Ex - Magnum Opus (#936104).
~ First Strike Designation - includes the FS designation, either alone or in combination with other designations.
Ex - First Strike, Cleveland Minuteman (#935848).
~ First Day of Issue Designation - includes the FDI designation, either alone or in combination with other designations.
Ex - First Day of Issue, Cleveland Minuteman (#935849).

The Highlights:
~ Less than 5% of the PCGS graded coins are "base" (i.e., have no designations).
~ Less than 5% of the PCGS graded coins have a designation that is not based on submission timing.
~ More than 60% of the PCGS graded coins include the "First Strike" designation.
~ More than 90% of the PCGS graded coins include a designation based on submission timing (i.e., FS, or FDI).
