Could PCGS Customize A Holder To Make It Any Less Desirable?

I'm not killing the seller of this coin, but I'm thinking that most folks would have more than one issue with the set-up of the coin in the slab. PCGS graded it as a mint state coin and it looks like it might have mint state surfaces, but who knows as the images are not good enough to really find out. The seller also offers a return policy of 30-days and the BIN is absolutely in line with the PCGS price guide and is consistent with auction sales. Again, no shade or hate on the seller.

However, the slab just makes my eyes bleed, more or less, and I can't imagine this helps the liquidity of a coin like this. Given how so many of us have a little bit of OCD when it comes to holder generation, look of coins and whatnot this just makes me scratch my head and say "wow..."

    Funny that you used the term “whatnot” as that is exactly the platform (Whatnot) that the dealer behind these slabs uses for many of his sales. The slabs seem to sell just like the countless other special issues we have seen over the years. I think the combination of the coin and this particular slab don’t look good. I’m not against this slab though as it can work in the right circumstances (certain modern coins for instance). And I would not pay a premium for this slab but also wouldn’t discount it/want to crack and reholder if I bought a coin I liked in it.

    The seller was (may still be) a member here and these slabs have been discussed here before. Like you I find that insert to be hideous, but these are rather popular with younger collectors that use platforms like whatnot and FB.

    Never liked em as well. There are some really nice special PCGS slabs out there (Elite, Simpson, Koessl) but most tend to be misses.

    My 1932-S MS64 WQ I just got had this promotion slab stuff on it. I hated it. Luckily it seems that it had a blue label last yr at auction before it then got this promotion reslab to it ! PCGS Ruined the placement. Just look at it! Whatnot is a sham, the quick buy it bids and the rip-off prices to clueless buyers. These livestreamers grow followers that are loyal and protect them no matter what. Its a shame. Luckily I haven't wasted my own money on those whatnot auctions. I sent the slab off last week to get regraded/reslabbed and a TV.

    Whos idea was it to place it like this ??? lol (Fyi someone mentioned its popular with young people, I'm a young collector and I don't like it, if I have a highly collectible key date coin, i'd like it in a normal holder please!

    I actually don’t mind this holder paired with shiny modern coins like Silver Eagles.

    But it really doesn’t jibe with 19th century coins or the aesthetics of circulated silver.

    Maybe if I could get it at a discount, but I wouldn’t pay a premium for it, because I know potential buyers would have issue with it. And I don’t fool with crackouts, reholdering and all that mess.

    I do not know, but suspect it is a Trader Bea submitted design rather than a PCGS design. If you could come up with your own, what would you make? These are easily identifiable.

    Honestly, I don't hate that label. It has style.

    The answer is No; this is as bad as it gets. IMO the holder should have a straight forward professional look and not be a distraction from the coin. I really dislike any type of coloration (full color first strike flags as an example), but this one takes the cake!

    In general, I'd prefer to have my collection look as homogenous as is possible. I don't mind a little variance for rattlers and OGHs but this is jarring.

    The slab won't stop my purchase as I buy the coin not the holder, but I am likely to reholder such coins and factor that into my purchase. I think they look awful and detract from the coins. I don't see why dealers feel the need to do this. Certainly they don't bring any kind of premium or help market the coin coin shop do they?

    The DL hansen labels are not attractive either and I could care less about his pedigree.

    Perhaps that obscene looking holder was the brainchild of the same individual at PCGS who thought that putting GSA dollars in a larger plastic holder was a good idea?

    This is likely the start of a new trend. At least this example looks decent, but again I prefer all of my slabs to look the same.
