Do we need one or is it not necessary?

If they want to be serious, then they might be able to sell a $500 bill with Ronald Reagan. Coming up on the 30th Anniversary of the end of The Cold War.

The Treasury of course fears large denomination bills as easier to counterfeit or engage in illegal activity.

I think if they did issue a bill larger than $100 it would be hoarded and/or mostly gifted for Bar Mitzahs, birthdays, weddings, etc.

That may be the best argument for it, but is it enough?

Only about 10-12% of cash transactions are over $100.
80% of cash transactions are under $25.
