GTG: 1850 $5

Your guesses will dictate whether I send this over to CAC or not. I’ll post the grade tomorrow.

I think it's in a 50 holder but I like it as a CAC 45.

53.
Original looking AU. Many of these have been dipped to get higher grades.
AU53 RGDS!
My gut says the coin was graded 26-28 yrs ago by NGC as a 50. I see as a 53 with an attractive original look. A slightly better and under-appreciated date. I would leave it the holder instead of cracking out and I would submit. I think a CAC green is the most probable outcome.
I like the coin. Good luck with the decision and the grading outcome if submitted.

50 here.
For comparison:
AU 53 CAC:

AU 58 CAC:

I’m thinking AU-58.
@vpr
FWIIW… I like your coin better than the other two you posted…

it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
I would call it 53 from a technical standpoint, although after seeing the other two CAC-approved examples, I think CAC would like it even as a 55 because it's so "original".

I’m in the 50-53 range.
Whatever it turns out to be its wonderful to view originality on gold
I like it as a 50-53. I think your pictures make the surfaces look worse.
Hard to say from the pics but I think there’s enough luster for a AU55, maybe even a 58.
Nice looking coin!

Will guess XF-45
AU55 CAC approved.
Looks like a Fairmont piece.
Scarce date too.
Star 2 (at least in the photo) is worrisome.
I like 53 but NGC may have graded higher. Tough date.

Thanks everyone! I still love the coin for, as you and I both said, "original/honest surfaces". Estimated population of 175 coins and who knows when another honest one will come up for sale.
What I noticed compared to the AU58 CAC is that mine has better details in the neck feathers and the tail of the arrow in the eagle's claws. This is in hindsight, not when I was buying the coin. At the time, I just liked that it was dull (how can an AU coin that is 175 years old not look dull unless it was messed with?). This one's in my permanent collection, not for sale for another 30+ years (hopefully).
Here is the picture with the grade in an old NGC fatty:
I think yours is a really nice 55 and IMO would bean in that holder. 58's are dang near mint state in CAC and they mean it IMO. This is a CAC AU55

Nice coin, I was way off. Pictures didn't make it easy. Worth a trip to CAC regardless.

i was thinking less than a 58
@vpr, hmm. I thought it was guess the grade? Looks like I was the only one who definitively guessed AU-58. Love the original look of your coin. My guess was based on a similar $5.00 I’ve owned since the late ‘80’s. Comparing the two, looks like they were graded within the same time frame and NGC thought they just missed unc. status for grading at that time. Take a look.

Mine may even be a little earlier w/o the bar code.
My initial thoughts about the coin being graded 26-28 yrs ago is very close- could even be 30 years. I like the coin and would still submit. I really don’t see a downside… if gets a green that would obviously be good… if not, you still have a better date no-motto $5 with surfaces that matter more than a sticker.
Keep in mind that we were all grading the image and then trying to handicap how gold was graded by NGC 26-30 years ago. Good to see that this one received a much deserved grade at the time. I would keep this one too. If you submit, please consider updating the thread once the results are known. Good luck with the submission if you go that route.
