I'll gladly pay face value, real money, actual cost to send my $.44, less than 13 oz envelope if the USPS breaks even on it.
What does a $.44 stamped envelope really cost?
My guess - a lot more than $.44 cents. I'll go 6x face on this one. That would be $2.64?, for a 13 oz envelope? Throw in the "If it Fits, It Ships" campaign, up to 70 lbs? This has got to be a money loser.
The USPS is supposed to run off of monies earned. Hence the claim in this thread, "No taxpayer dollars are involved".
Bad news. The USPS ain't running off of monies earned. Let alone pay that freaking $5.5 billion to the retirement pension fund.
Crazy. I think we should pay as we go with the USPS.
I heard the head of the post office saying that in fact the post office is a profit making business and only recently that the government stuck its nose in and made them waste extra money that they went down fast.
His summation was that the government should NOT give something like 5 billion that was owed and just stay out of the PO affairs and they will be making profit again in 3-5 years.

You are right here. I work a unionized job and it would be amazing how much harder people would work if their pay and job security depended on them alone. The PO's deficit is roughly what we spend in Iraq and Afghanistan in about a week. Let's make them more nimble in the marketplace, store kiosks etc instead of buildings, down size, whatever, but I don't want to see the PO go. Where is it written that they must show a profit?

USPS, even registered, on 4 figure and up coins can be expensive already.
I just sent a low 4 figure package that at registered rates would have been $21. FedEx? Standard Overnight $13.50 or 2nd day for $12.61 UPS? 2nd Day $15.36
FedEx and UPS don't insure coins but these rates include insurance through a 3rd party insurer.
The downside is, as noted on other threads, UPS and FedEx don't care if a package is lost. They don't look for it. If it's gone, it's gone. And I'm with the others on "I would rather have the coin back. Forget the money." >>
What 3rd party for insurance ?
UPS cross country with $1000 insurance is $20 and will take 5 days.
USPS is $21 regular priority, $16 for small flat rate and will take 3 days, plus they (for now) deliver on Saturday and if your not home during the day (i work) I can pick it up at the post office. I'm never home for ups delivery and have to ask someone to come over a wait for the package.
But I am VERY interested in getting these rates, FedEx Standard Overnight $13.50 or 2nd day for $12.61, both fully insured, let us all know, just post it in the forum. Thanks for saving us all money.
If the USPS cannot get it's act together and stop operating at a loss then it has to go! Period!
If the postal rates need to go up then they should increase the appropriate rates to the appropriate levels. Let the people who use the USPO pay for the services they need. If the rates get too expensive for the consumer, then the consumer can choose another option to ship products. There is simply NO REASON to subsidize the USPO.
What we've got here is failure to communicate.....
<< <i>, plus they (for now) deliver on Saturday and if your not home during the day (i work) I can pick it up at the post office. I'm never home for ups delivery and have to ask someone to come over a wait for the package >>
This, to me, is a super key issue.....
I HATE HATE HATE receiving Fedex packages now (and UPS...from the USMint of all things), as I am seldom home when they attempt to deliver and they aren't always available when they say they are to pick them up.
The USPS has M-Sa hours they adhere to and I have NEVER ONCE tried to pick up a package when they said it would be available, and not been able to get it.
I hate entitlement but I do think the USPS was, and is, an essential service to our country and many folks that couldn't afford a private service (think documents that can be sent for 44c) rely on this. We, in my opinion, as a country, need to keep the USPS and not drop it or privatize it.
What needs to happen is that they need to allow non-performing people to get let go. They need to drastically scale back on the entitlements.
let the post office go out of business. lets use UPS or FED EX. That would still get our coins mailed where we need . I think its time someone in the govt agency felt what companies all over the country have felt for a while. Who know MAYBE just maybe there will be a better system that follows the post office A system that is more reliable. And if not without the post office there will be alot more UPS and FED EX places so more jobs will need to be had to cover the towns. So without government high salaries and govt benefits that are much more than what it should cost to push a stamp they can get paid what normal people get paid $10 or $12 an hr to push the same stamp.

Faulty logic, IMHO. You may get coins mailed, but they would not be delivered to rural areas (as is now) which are deemed not cost effective by the rocket scientists at UPS or FED-EX. And, it would cost you a lot more money to "mail" those items. USPS is mandated to deliver everywhere, no one else is. In fact, through agreements between USPS and private carriers (in effect right now), USPS often delivers private carrier mail the last steps on the route... John

I like being able to drive two minutes to my post office to pick up a coin if I am not at home to receive it and I like not having my packages set outside in the weather in the wide open if I am not home and a sig is not required. USPS puts my packages on my front porch out of the elements. UPS and Fed Ex leaves them out in the driveway leaning against the garage to save themselves 15 steps.
OLD POST RESURRECTED BY ACCIDENT
If we only knew what % of ups and fedex packages are delivered to the USPS, then I think a lot more logic would have to be considered before shutting down the USPS. Can't drive by a post office here w/o seeing a fedex or ups truck delivering. I have several sellers who only ship with ups/fedex and as often as not the packages say couldn't find or no one home or best yet...left on porch but in my box at post office.
Yes there is definite problems, but lets fix them before going to the extreme.

It's actually an interesting view back in time. The OP was full of woe 14 years ago, all for nothing. The USPS is still here, and I am confident that will be the situation another 14 years from now, and beyond.
Now, other countries have not been so lucky. In Denmark they will stop delivering letters next year. They will only deliver packages. It's no big loss, I guess, since it costs over $4 to send a letter in Denmark.
Other foreign postal services may be on a similar trajectory.
I read this thread for post after post thinking it was current, and then ran into a complaint about 'Obama'. Oh nuts, its from 2011! Does seem to ring true here today though.
Me personally, I hope the PO gets cut way down, what a massive expense for very little benefit, the only mail I ever get is bulk junk advertisements, goes straight into the recycle bin. The rare thing of value could just as well go FedEx or UPS.
A big loss would be the PO box holders. A lot of coin business uses PO boxes. Sole proprietorships and many customers do not like using their home addresses. It will definitely chill those parcels significant others might have issues with on the retail side. eBay will be a huge loser too because of that more broadly.
Wow, a thread from 15 years ago? I was under the impression that private express companies will not accept shipments of money? So that leaves us only brinks and their brand of competitor?
If this was resurrected by accident.... then you are forgiven!
I suspect the USPS may likely be privatized. My understanding why the USPS has been in real trouble for many years.... is the pension plan issue. When the USPS was 'privatized' years ago, legislation required that they FULLLY FUND the pension plan. Other private firms, etc., were not required to do so. So that has always hung on the company.
And of course... I'm sure there is plenty of waste, fraud, etc. to be found, like in other areas that are becoming more and more discovered.
