Longacre, I surely feel your pain. Many years ago my brother dragged me up to NC to dig for rubies and I ended up with a little ruby and a sweet aquamarine. It didn't seem worth the effort until he explained that there wasn't any way to avoid buying jewelry for your girlfriend or wife so you might as well get ahead of it now. At first I blew it off until a semi-serious relationship confirmed his advise.
Don't you just hate that?
So, just like with coins it is just a matter of educating yourself and gaining an understanding of the market. So to put it in terms this forum will appreciate, that means more money for coins!!!!!
I bought some small 18K jewelry pieces for my wife and daughters last fall at the gold souq in Qatar. It’s the absolute best place to buy jewelry due to the small markup as well as being tax free. I paid about 50 percent above melt.
Forget about Buying Pre made Jewelry ,,if you want your moneys worth ?? have it custom made and no stones unless you already own them and have them set in your new custom piece !!
I think you would be surprised what you can have crafted from gold !! and how competitive the cost is !!
I'll go one step further and say find an independent custom jewler if you can.
Then look for stones that are distressed.
Like certified divorced diamonds of Estate gems...the stone doesn't have a memory.
Well discounted wholesale certified gems and custom one of a kind settings are where you can get ahead of the price tag.
Actually not stressful at all. Need to take a trip to Alaska and visit the Alaska Mint. Pick up some one of a kind pieces like this nugget ring (set) made from Alaska gold; no sales tax in Anchorage.
Can't go wrong with a Rolex. Won this piece at HA under $2500, sent it to Rolex for reconditioning for another $1500. Beautiful piece for $4000 and matches well with mine. She's more than happy.
TIP: if you are in the market for a Rolex and have plans to travel to Anchorage, the savings of not paying any sales tax on a large purchase like a Rolex, actually pays for your round trip ticket(s).
