My grade is 30 on the ‘61-s and 40 on the ‘66–s

I suspect the CAC grades are 25 and 35

I came in at 25 and 40 although 35 wouldn't surprise me on the second one.

Believe it or not, both are graded VF35! Quite a variance in details for the same grade. My grades for the two coins would be
    VF25, XF40.

That's crazy. That 66-s has a lot of reverse wing meat. Also, I thought there was more difficulty in striking the with motto reverses..

BTW beautiful examples. Where did the 66-s come from?

The 1866-S is in the D. L. Hanson collection, the 1861-S is in my collection.

I suspect the 61-s has nice surfaces whereby one can account for a weak strike as opposed to greater wear at the VF20 level- and that in part is how I arrived at 30. So my gut tells me it likely even looks better in hand.

The 66-s is nice and a similar observation can be made. I suspect the 66-s may have been a better end product which may account for the 35. I see it as a 40

35 sounds fine for the second coin. The first coin is clearly overgraded at 35.

Nice Circs especially the 2nd one

Edit: disregard, my bad, grades posted, the first is a mystery. No way imho.

VF 30 and VF35. Interesting pair. No Motto, Motto and Large S and Small s. Non collectors of this series will be shown the series' differences.

I think the lack of toning and color makes the first coin look even more overgraded.

Edited to see you received both as VF35. Wow that’s good fortune there.
