New US Mint gold denomination for next year

The United States Mint has produced ten different denominations of gold coins throughout its history. These denominations are:

Next year it appears there will be a new denomination added, the $125 gold coin. So there will be eleven denominations in gold for collectors in the future to choose from.

    I would qualify the OP to say “American denominations” or the like, as it has struck numerous foreign denominations.

    Could you even see a $1 gold coin now? I think it would be interesting to have a $2500 gold coin, right near it being useful as a downward hedge against gold going down.

    Will that be the first non-round coin issued by the US Mint?

    Agree. The odd shape is just another gimmick. As far as a non-round coin, the mint issued an octagon shaped commemorative $50 gold coin for the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915.

    Yes, I forgot the Pan-Pac. And the hexagonal 1925 Norse Medal, which is collected as a classic commem, but not really a “coin”.

    Not a collector of gold from any mint, the price is always way over the top. 2026 will pass with barely a notice from me.

    A “125” unit for a “250 year” event makes no sense. I wonder if they are planning to do a “250” Ounce?

    I had the same thought. To celebrate our country's 250th birthday, the mint should make a $250 gold coin using the same 1 OZT gold planchet being used for the 1 OZT AGE.
